Tracking Configuration Engineer

Role Overview

This position sits within the technical team and centres on getting telematics hardware into vehicles and keeping it reporting accurately once it is there. Day to day you will mount and wire tracking units, load the correct device and platform settings, then chase down whatever stops a vehicle from reporting — a loose ground, a wrong APN, a failing fuel sensor, a dormant SIM, a misread CAN signal. Your work directly determines whether fleet operators can trust the location, status and sensor data they see, so reliability and precision matter more than speed alone.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out physical installation of GPS tracking units, relays, immobiliser cut-offs, electronic locks and associated sensors across a range of vehicle types, following recognised wiring and quality standards.
• Provision devices on the tracking platform, including APN credentials, server IP and port, communication protocol selection, input/output mapping, alert thresholds and reporting parameters.
• Commission fleet management environments such as Wialon — activating units, building geo-fences, calibrating fuel and other sensors, defining trip and reporting logic, and setting up user access where required.
• Diagnose and repair faults at both ends of the chain: hardware failures, damaged harnesses and poor electrical connections on the vehicle side, and configuration, connectivity or reporting errors on the software side.
• Investigate common field complaints directly — units showing offline, interrupted communication, power loss, drifting or inaccurate positions, and sensors returning implausible readings — and resolve them to root cause.
• Interface with ignition circuits, relays, fuel level sensors, CAN bus feeds and electronic locking systems without disturbing the vehicle's existing electrical behaviour.
• Maintain installation and configuration records, and confirm each job meets the quality checks and compliance requirements set for the technical department.
• Support colleagues and customers with second-line technical assistance, explaining faults and fixes in plain language and escalating where a deeper product issue is suspected.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Diploma or degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Telecommunications or a comparable technical discipline.
• Two to three years of hands-on experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting GPS vehicle tracking systems.
• Working knowledge of vehicle electrical architecture: ignition feeds, immobilisers, relays, fuel sensors, CAN bus connections and electronic locks.
• Practical familiarity with fleet management platforms, ideally Wialon or a similar telematics solution.
• Demonstrated ability to trace and fix both hardware and software faults rather than only replacing parts.
• Comfortable working across both sides of the job — physical installation in the field and configuration on the platform.
• A valid driving licence is an advantage.
• Strong fault-finding and problem-solving approach, with close attention to detail and pride in workmanship.
• Able to work unsupervised, manage your own schedule, and stay effective under pressure when deadlines or customer demands are tight.
• Clear communication and a service-minded manner when dealing with colleagues and clients.
