Role Overview
This role lives on the pool deck and in the wider sports programme, where you will plan and teach swimming at every level of ability, from early water confidence through to refined stroke technique. You will also carry Physical Health and Education teaching within the CBC framework, helping learners connect movement, well-being and teamwork in ways they carry beyond school. The position matters because competence in water is a safety skill and a confidence skill at once — the way you teach it shapes how willingly and how safely students approach swimming for the rest of their lives.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver swimming lessons that are differentiated by ability, with clear progression from water familiarisation through stroke development and into advanced technique.
- Teach Physical Health and Education lessons in line with the CBC curriculum, integrating swimming alongside broader physical literacy outcomes.
- Develop students' teamwork, sportsmanship and understanding of healthy lifestyle habits through practical, active learning.
- Work with departmental colleagues to design inquiry-based, student-centred learning experiences rather than one-size-fits-all lessons.
- Enforce pool safety routines, supervise the pool environment attentively, and maintain a supportive, inclusive space where every learner feels able to take part.
- Track the school's swimming equipment, keeping records of what is available and flagging anything that needs repair, replacement or restocking.
- Act as a positive role model who motivates both children and adults to participate in swimming and keeps sessions enjoyable and encouraging.
- Contribute to the co-curricular sports programme, school events and whole-school initiatives, and provide lesson cover within the department during planned staff absences or emergencies.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor's Degree in Education with a specialisation in Physical Education.
- Current registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
- A recognised swimming coaching qualification at FINA Level II as a minimum, or certification from the Kenya Swimming Teachers & Coaches Association or an equivalent body.
- At least three years' experience teaching swimming in a school setting, supported by demonstrable achievements in that time.
- Lifeguard certification and First Aid training are an added advantage.
