Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the intersection of finance and project delivery, ensuring every shilling spent on complex engineering and construction initiatives is tracked, justified, and reported against contract commitments. Day to day, you will shape how project costs are structured and captured, turning raw procurement, subcontractor, and operational data into reliable forecasts, variance analyses, and board-ready reports. Your work directly enables project managers to make confident decisions, keeps revenue recognition compliant with IFRS and Kenyan tax rules, and protects the company’s margins across CapEx and OpEx from kickoff to final close-out.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the project accounting backbone: chart of accounts, job codes, cost centres, and allocation rules customised for multi-phase energy and infrastructure programmes.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and rolling forecast cycles for both capital and operational expenditure, incorporating standard costing templates, milestone-linked spend plans, and clear approval thresholds.
  • Produce monthly and weekly financial packs covering project P&L, work-in-progress, cost-to-complete, committed-versus-incurred costs, and margin erosion or recovery, translating numbers into actionable commentary for non-finance stakeholders.
  • Track every revenue stream from contract signature to final invoice, applying the correct recognition treatment for time-and-materials, lump-sum, and unit-rate agreements while managing change orders, claims, retentions, and dispute resolutions.
  • Own the cashflow forecasting cycle by aligning procurement schedules, supplier payment terms, subcontractor progress claims, and equipment hire obligations and then reconciling client accounts to clear open billing discrepancies.
  • Validate subcontractor invoices and equipment hire charges against signed agreements, verifying quantities, rates, and milestones before approval, and flagging contractual non-compliance to commercial teams.
  • Administer project fixed assets, including capitalisation thresholds, depreciation runs, transfers, disposals, and the asset register, and maintain EHS-related cost tracking for safety and environmental compliance initiatives.
  • Configure and fine-tune the Odoo ERP environment, automating recurring financial reports, dashboards, and KPIs while enforcing segregation of duties and supporting internal and external audit closing.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related discipline, with CPA(K), ACCA, CIMA, or an equivalent professional certification strongly preferred; an MBA or MSc in Finance is an added advantage.
  • At least six years of accounting and finance experience, including a minimum of five years dedicated to project accounting or cost control within oil and gas, renewable energy, EPC, heavy construction, or infrastructure sectors.
  • Hands-on expertise in contract accounting across T&M, lump-sum, and unit-rate models, including revenue recognition, work-in-progress schedules, cost-to-complete analysis, and cashflow management.
  • Deep familiarity with IFRS, Kenyan tax legislation, environmental levies, and statutory reporting requirements applicable to large-scale capital projects.
  • Advanced-level Excel skills for complex modelling, pivots, and scenario analysis, paired with proven ERP configuration experience; Odoo proficiency is particularly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to validate subcontractor costs, support procurement controls, manage fixed-asset registers, and audit project financials from document requests to finding closure.
  • Strong stakeholder and communication skills, with a track record of advising project, operations, procurement, HSE, and commercial teams on cost coding, financial compliance, and decision support.
