Role Overview
The Senior House Officer/Medical Officer supports the assessment and treatment of critically ill patients in the ICU and HDU, working under the direction of a Critical Care Consultant. The role combines hands-on clinical care with communication across multidisciplinary teams, teaching, and participation in safety and quality improvement work.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess patients in the critical care units, request and interpret diagnostic tests, develop care plans, and keep patients, families, referring clinicians, and consultants informed.
- Join scheduled ICU and HDU rounds and coordinate care with the wider clinical team under consultant supervision.
- Carry out or oversee critical care procedures within your level of competence, seeking appropriate supervision when needed.
- Help non-critical-care clinicians assess and triage potential critical care patients, including through telephone or electronic consultation, as directed by the consultant.
- Support junior medical staff and teach medical students, interns, and residents when assigned.
- Contribute to clinical policies, practice guidance, departmental research, quality improvement, and patient safety initiatives.
- Take part in weekly critical care morbidity and mortality meetings, including presenting cases when requested.
- Work with colleagues to reduce clinical errors and unnecessary waste, use resources responsibly, seek feedback, and maintain professional competence.
Requirements & Qualifications
- MBChB degree and registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- Completed medical internship and at least one year of post-internship experience.
- Current Advanced Life Support certification at ACLS level or higher, and Advanced Trauma Life Support certification.
- Ability to use hospital clinical equipment safely and competently.
- Clear communication skills and a collaborative approach to working with patients and colleagues.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development; able to receive guidance and meet deadlines.
