Role Overview
The Senior Exports Supervisor owns the daily running of the export desk, moving shipments from booking and documentation through customs clearance, carrier handover and final delivery. The position sits at the junction of frontline operations and the commercial team, so it carries accountability for service performance as well as the accuracy of every statutory filing. It matters because a missed cut-off or a flawed customs submission costs the business both customer confidence and regulatory standing — this role is the control point that prevents both.
Key Responsibilities
- Run day-to-day export activity: set priorities across the desk, manage documentation and vessel/flight cut-offs, and confirm each customer's cargo departs on the committed date.
- Keep the chain synchronised: coordinate paperwork, customs clearance, shipping lines, haulage and warehouse teams so no handover stalls waiting on another function.
- Watch performance continuously: track operational KPIs for turnaround, accuracy and productivity, act on dips with corrective measures, and escalate risks such as rejected entries, missed sailings or capacity shortfalls together with a recommended fix.
- Own assigned client relationships: answer queries within agreed service levels, resolve complaints, run periodic service reviews, and contribute to retention efforts and tariff review discussions.
- Protect compliance: uphold customs and revenue-authority requirements, including KRA submissions and bond returns and statutory documentation, and keep records audit-ready for internal and external reviews.
- Report and analyse: compile daily, weekly and monthly operational reports, read the trends behind the numbers, and recommend process or cost improvements to management.
- Feed the commercial pipeline: build quotations and operational proposals for prospective business, take part in customer visits, and manage the operational onboarding of new accounts.
- Lead the exports team: allocate work, monitor output, coach and develop staff, hold performance conversations, flag training needs, and drive adherence to company policy and operating standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in International Business, Logistics, Supply Chain Management or a closely related discipline.
- At least 8 years working in export operations within logistics, freight forwarding, transport or supply chain management.
- A minimum of 3 years supervising or managing a team at supervisory level, including work allocation and performance feedback.
- Practical command of customs processes and revenue-authority requirements, including bond returns and statutory documentation submissions.
- Confidence with freight documentation, Incoterms, clearance procedures and the coordination of carriers, transport and warehousing.
- Comfort reading operational data — KPI tracking, trend analysis, productivity reporting — and turning it into action.
- Proven client-facing skills: SLA-driven query resolution, service reviews and support for quotation and tariff work.
- Demonstrated ability to coach a team, identify capability gaps and embed continuous improvement in daily routines.
