Senior Backend Engineer

Role Overview

This Senior Backend Engineer role sits within the group’s technology function and is responsible for shaping the backend systems that power automation, integrations, and digital products. On a typical day, you will design services, refine event-driven architectures, and ensure APIs remain reliable under production load, while also partnering with product and frontend colleagues to move features from concept to launch. The position combines deep backend ownership with a practical full-stack mindset, so expect to step into frontend integration work and prototyping when the team needs that versatility.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and APIs using Java, Spring Boot, and RESTful patterns to support enterprise-class digital platforms.
• Architect and manage event-driven messaging pipelines with Kafka and RabbitMQ, ensuring fault tolerance, message ordering, and resilience across distributed systems.
• Step in as a full-stack contributor when needed, assisting with frontend feature integration and building end-to-end prototypes that validate product ideas quickly.
• Refactor and evolve existing service applications to improve performance, security, and maintainability while integrating with internal and external partner ecosystems.
• Partner with DevOps to automate deployment pipelines, strengthen infrastructure-as-code, and embed DevSecOps practices into every stage of delivery.
• Lead Agile squad execution by coordinating priorities with Product Owners, breaking down work, and ensuring releases align with commercial and regulatory requirements.
• Conduct rigorous code reviews, enforce engineering standards, and mentor junior developers to raise technical capability across the team.
• Monitor production systems for uptime, latency, and error rates, then drive continuous improvement through testing, observability, and incident response.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field; a Master’s degree is a plus.
• 10+ years of backend engineering experience, with at least a meaningful portion in banking, fintech, or digital financial services.
• Deep expertise in Java and Spring Boot, with a proven record of designing RESTful APIs and large-scale backend components.
• Solid hands-on experience with microservices architecture, service orchestration, and event-driven systems using Kafka or RabbitMQ.
• Demonstrated full-stack awareness, including familiarity with frontend technologies and the ability to integrate APIs into user-facing features when required.
• Working knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure; familiarity with .NET Core is advantageous.
• Strong version control skills with Git, plus practical experience with CI/CD tools like Jenkins and code quality platforms like SonarQube.
• Proven leadership in cross-functional environments, with the ability to influence technical decisions at senior levels and communicate clearly with business stakeholders.
