Senior Auditor

Role Overview

You will take full ownership of external audit engagements in a professional services environment, guiding each assignment from initial planning through to client delivery. Beyond examining financial records, you will coach less experienced staff, advise clients on practical improvements, and ensure every piece of work meets rigorous professional and regulatory standards. This is an ideal role for an experienced auditor ready to move beyond execution and take genuine responsibility for audit quality, team performance, and client relationships.

Key Responsibilities

• Shape the overall audit approach: assess risk, set materiality, allocate team resources, and prepare realistic budgets and timelines for each engagement.
• Lead fieldwork by directing audit assistants, assigning tasks, and reviewing their working papers to ensure accuracy and completeness.
• Test the design and operating effectiveness of client internal controls, identify gaps, and dig into the underlying causes of financial discrepancies.
• Scrutinise financial statements and supporting documentation against IFRS and statutory requirements, flagging areas that need adjustment or further investigation.
• Keep audit working files in immaculate order so that all conclusions and judgements are clearly documented, fully supported, and compliant with ISAs.
• Draft audit reports and management letters that translate technical findings into clear, actionable recommendations for clients.
• Present contentious or sensitive issues to client management, facilitate discussions on appropriate resolutions, and confirm that agreed actions are practical for their business.
• Serve as the day-to-day mentor for junior audit staff, offering on-the-job training and constructive feedback to help them grow.
• Track each assignment against its agreed time and fee budget, proactively escalating anything that threatens on-time delivery.
• Maintain and deepen existing client relationships, while looking for opportunities to explain how the firm can provide further value beyond the statutory audit.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related discipline.
• CPA(K), ACCA, or an equivalent recognised professional qualification, whether fully completed or advanced towards completion; Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) membership is an advantage.
• At least four to six years of external audit experience gained within a public accounting or professional audit firm.
• Solid working knowledge of International Standards on Auditing (ISA) and the confidence to apply them in real-world engagements.
• Strong familiarity with IFRS financial reporting requirements and applicable tax legislation.
• Analytical and problem-solving ability, balanced with the practical judgement needed to assess risk and materiality.
• First-rate written and verbal communication skills, especially when compiling audit conclusions or explaining them to clients.
• Supervisory experience that includes planning others’ work, reviewing output, and giving useful feedback.
• Demonstrated integrity, professional scepticism, and discretion when handling confidential information.
• Strong organisational instincts and an ability to manage competing priorities without losing sight of quality.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and common audit software tools.
