Role Overview
This Senior Accountant position sits at the centre of the finance function for a growing Nyeri-based operation, with direct responsibility for the completeness and accuracy of the general ledger, month-end close, reporting and audit readiness. Beyond routine bookkeeping, the role is expected to interpret financial results, spot control weaknesses and provide clear analysis that helps local and international stakeholders make sound business decisions. You will work closely with a small finance team, review the work of more junior staff and engage regularly with colleagues serving US-based clients, so comfort with cross-border accounting matters is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and review the full accounting cycle, including the general ledger, journal entries, accruals, prepayments and provisions, ensuring all postings are accurate and well supported.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements plus management reporting packs, with variance commentary that highlights underlying drivers and business trends.
- Execute and review complex reconciliations across bank accounts, receivables, payables, payroll, intercompany balances and other balance sheet items, investigating and clearing discrepancies on time.
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, coordinating deadlines and reviewing outputs from finance colleagues before finalisation.
- Act as the main point of contact during internal and external audits by preparing schedules, responding to queries and ensuring all documentation is organised and accessible.
- Test and document internal controls against frameworks such as SOX and COSO, identifying gaps, assessing risk and recommending practical improvements.
- Support the budgeting and forecasting cycle, including monitoring actuals versus plan, investigating material variances and preparing analysis for management decision-making.
- Help maintain accounting policies, streamline workflows and support system enhancements that improve accuracy and reduce close times.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
- At least 4–5 years of progressive accounting experience, with a significant portion spent in a senior or lead role.
- A recognised professional qualification such as CPA, ACCA or an equivalent credential is strongly preferred.
- Hands-on experience across financial reporting, general ledger management, reconciliations, audits, compliance and internal controls in a commercial environment.
- Familiarity with applying U.S. GAAP or IFRS, particularly when supporting international or U.S.-based operations.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including pivot tables, lookups and financial modelling, along with solid working knowledge of accounting and ERP systems.
- The ability to work across time zones and communicate effectively with international clients, auditors and internal teams.
