Role Overview
This position owns a portfolio of public sector and infrastructure clients, combining hands-on relationship management with disciplined credit and operational risk control. Day to day, the jobholder is on the front foot with customers — originating and structuring new business, coordinating product specialists and credit partners, and keeping promises about pricing, service levels and turnaround times. Success shows up as sustainable economic profit: growth in revenue, volumes, acquisitions and cross-sell that is achieved without taking on credit exposures the bank cannot defend.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and execute a business development plan for the assigned public sector and infrastructure portfolio, identifying fresh opportunities with both established and prospective clients and driving each one through to completed sale and delivery.
- Bring in product specialists — corporate and project finance, transactional banking, markets and other capabilities — where a client's needs reach beyond straightforward lending, and stay accountable for the outcome of those joint efforts.
- Own credit risk end to end across the portfolio: prepare and review annual credit lines, work alongside corporate credit managers to assess and recommend facilities, and keep the cost of credit low by understanding the sector's trading dynamics.
- Track personal performance against financial, service and operational measures, including risk-adjusted contribution, and take corrective action early when targets or service standards slip.
- Maintain a consistent calling rhythm with existing and target clients, and create genuine operational dependency between the customer's processes and the bank's front- and back-end systems.
- Communicate proactively with clients on agreed service standards, negotiated pricing, relationship contacts, product changes and expected delivery dates for applications, and take personal responsibility for resolving complaints rather than passing them along.
- Review the portfolio continuously against anti-money laundering, know-your-customer and audit expectations, ensuring every relationship stands up to internal and regulatory scrutiny.
- Keep abreast of competitor activity and market shifts across the bank's geographic footprint, feeding insight back so segment strategy stays relevant, and contribute to raising capability across the team by coaching others and acting on feedback about your own development.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A university or college degree, or an equivalent relevant professional qualification.
- More than five years of technical and managerial experience in banking, with a substantial portion spent managing public sector clients whose needs span multiple products.
- Demonstrated exposure to corporate and project finance alongside transactional banking and financial markets products, including the ability to hold credible conversations about complex, multi-product requirements.
- Advanced working knowledge of banking, plus a sound grasp of lending criteria as applied to both business and personal lending.
- Familiarity with how different areas of a bank are organised and positioned to serve public sector customers, and the judgement to pull the right partners into a deal at the right time.
- Awareness of the wider macro- and micro-economic environment and how it shapes sector risk and client appetite.
- Commercial drive with a proven record of hitting demanding revenue, volume and acquisition targets, together with the stakeholder skills to manage organisational complexity and reach outcomes that work for both the client and the bank.
- Resilience, receptiveness to feedback, and a genuine interest in developing both yourself and the people around you.
