Role Overview
This position sits at the front line of our lending operations, combining business development with hands-on credit portfolio management. You will spend a significant portion of your week outside the office—visiting prospects, building referral networks, and meeting clients where they work and live—while also guiding every application from first conversation through final repayment. Your ability to bring in sound borrowers and keep them on track directly protects the health of our loan book and fuels the institution’s growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Prospect and generate new lending opportunities through targeted field visits, face-to-face cold calling, and structured follow-ups with community leaders, small business owners, and existing client referrals.
- Qualify leads and convert them into credit applicants, matching each prospective borrower with the appropriate personal or business loan product based on their needs and cash flow.
- Collect and review all required application documents, verify basic information, and prepare preliminary risk assessments to support the credit committee’s decision-making.
- Track application progress from submission to disbursement, coordinating with internal teams to resolve documentation gaps and ensure smooth, timely loan rollouts.
- Actively monitor repayment schedules, contact clients before and after due dates, and recover overdue amounts through professional negotiation and structured follow-up plans.
- Maintain and deepen relationships with an assigned portfolio of borrowers, responding to queries on balances, statements, restructuring options, and early settlement requests.
- Prepare accurate weekly and monthly performance summaries covering new leads, disbursements, collection rates, and portfolio at risk, submitting these to management for review.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Diploma or higher qualification in Sales & Marketing, Business Administration, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- At least one year of proven sales experience, ideally within microfinance, a commercial bank, a SACCO, or another regulated lending environment.
- Demonstrable history of consistently hitting or surpassing monthly sales and collection targets, backed by verifiable performance records.
- Confident, persuasive communication skills in both in-person presentations and written correspondence, with the ability to negotiate repayment terms successfully.
- Strong interpersonal and listening skills that build trust with diverse clients, especially small business owners and first-time borrowers.
- Solid knowledge of credit fundamentals, due diligence processes, and local lending regulations, paired with a strong commitment to ethical collection practices and client confidentiality.
- Self-discipline and time-management ability to organise daily field routes, manage multiple applications, and prioritise overdue accounts without constant supervision.
