Day-to-day work includes preparing and supervising laboratory sessions for undergraduate physics and engineering courses, calibrating equipment, and advising students on experimental procedures. The role is critical to ensuring that hands-on learning in physics, control systems, and telecommunications meets academic standards and supports the university’s engineering and technology curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Guide students during practical sessions, demonstrating proper use of equipment and ensuring safety protocols are followed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty instruments, including oscilloscopes, signal generators, sensors, and microcontrollers.
  • Assist faculty in designing and testing new lab exercises or modifying existing ones for improved learning outcomes.
  • Inventory and order laboratory consumables and spare parts, tracking usage to avoid shortages.
  • Provide technical support for student research projects, including data collection and analysis using software such as MATLAB or LabVIEW.
  • Document equipment calibration logs, incident reports, and maintenance schedules in line with university procedures.
  • Collaborate with academic staff to install or upgrade laboratory systems, such as control rigs or telecommunication setups.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Option 1: Master’s degree in Physics, Control & Instrumentation, Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Control Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, or a related field from a recognized institution AND a Bachelor’s degree in one of those fields. At least three years of relevant work experience is an added advantage.
  • Option 2: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field OR a Higher National Diploma (HND) in a relevant area from a recognized institution, combined with a minimum of five years of experience in a Grade 11 or equivalent position.
  • KCSE (or equivalent) certificate as proof of secondary education completion.
  • Registration with the relevant professional body (e.g., Engineers Board of Kenya, Institute of Physics) where required by law.
  • Proven ability to handle and maintain scientific and engineering laboratory equipment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for preparing reports and instructing students.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and laboratory management best practices.
