Role Overview
The painter prepares surfaces, applies spray finishes, checks quality, and completes paint rework on units assigned to the production flow. Working under the direction of supervisors and the paint engineer, the role keeps paint work aligned with quality standards, safety rules, and the production schedule. Good paint work matters because it determines whether each unit leaves the line with a finish that meets specification and is ready for the next stage.
Key Responsibilities
- Comply with workplace safety rules and safe painting practices, and take part in required safety training and briefings.
- Inspect vehicle bodies and frames to judge whether repair and refinishing can be done and to choose the most suitable method.
- Prepare surfaces by sanding, scraping, grinding, brushing, or applying paint remover to eliminate old paint, rust, and surface defects.
- Treat exposed metal with neutralizing and conditioning chemicals so it is ready for coating.
- Take off, refit, adjust, and align body components — including fenders, doors, door panels, hoods, deck lids, grilles, weather strips, bumpers, roofs, and quarter panels — when paint access or correct fit is required.
- Build up low or dented areas with body filler and shape the repair to match the surrounding body lines.
- Mix paint and related materials to the exact ratios specified by the manufacturer, apply coatings with spray painting equipment, inspect the finish for defects, and carry out rework or touch-ups to achieve the required quality.
- Follow paint process standards, keep accurate records, report on work completed, and carry out other paint-related duties assigned by the paint engineer.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Completion of secondary school education.
- Spray Painter Grade III Trade Test qualification; specialized training or certification in paint technology is an added advantage.
- At least three years of relevant experience gained with a recognized employer.
- Previous experience in automotive paint processes or a similar manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Ability to work accurately and methodically, with attention to surface preparation, paint mixing, spray application, and finish quality.
- Working knowledge of safety requirements and best practices for painting operations.
- Capability to inspect body and frame condition, identify surface irregularities, and select appropriate repair or painting methods.
- Comfort using spray painting equipment and related tools, and following supervisor or paint engineer instructions on repair priorities, replacement decisions, and time targets.
