Role Overview

This position centres on carrying out a wide range of diagnostic laboratory procedures on patient specimens, producing accurate and timely results that directly inform clinical decisions. Working within a structured medical laboratory setting, the role involves operating automated analysers, preparing specimens, validating outcomes, and maintaining strict adherence to established protocols. The work is essential to supporting physicians in detecting, confirming, and monitoring disease, with a strong emphasis on accuracy, safety, and continuous quality improvement for every test performed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex diagnostic tests across haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunohematology using both manual techniques and automated laboratory instruments.
  • Prepare, label, and process patient specimens including blood, urine, and other body fluids, ensuring proper handling and storage to preserve sample integrity.
  • Review and verify test results for accuracy and reliability before release, investigating any inconsistent or unexpected outcomes and repeating tests where necessary.
  • Operate, calibrate, and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment, documenting any malfunctions and troubleshooting issues in line with standard operating procedures.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control activities, including internal and external proficiency testing, and contribute to the laboratory’s Quality Management System initiatives.
  • Maintain accurate records of all tests performed, results reported, and reagents consumed, using the laboratory’s Health Management Information System.
  • Follow strict infection prevention and biosafety protocols when handling specimens, reagents, and waste, ensuring a safe work environment for staff and patients.
  • Work collaboratively with other laboratory staff and clinical teams, providing technical support and clear communication on test status or sample-related issues.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Laboratory Sciences or a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognised institution.
  • Have completed at least one year of internship or practical laboratory working experience in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
  • Be registered with the Kenya Medical Laboratory Technicians and Technologists Board and possess a current, valid practising license.
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of Laboratory Quality Management Systems, with the ability to apply quality assurance principles in daily laboratory work.
  • Possess strong computer literacy, particularly with Health Management Information Systems and laboratory data entry software.
  • Show effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact professionally with colleagues, clinicians, and other stakeholders.
  • Be attentive to detail, methodical, and capable of working accurately under pressure while maintaining confidentiality of patient information.
