Role Overview
The Junior Accountant keeps the day-to-day bookkeeping engine running across several companies within one group, working inside an integrated ERP system that links accounting records directly to inventory and operational activity. The work blends routine processing — posting transactions, clearing reconciliations, maintaining ledgers — with the more investigative side of accounting: tracing why a bank line, an M-PESA payment or a stock figure does not agree with the records and following it through to a resolution. Accuracy here matters well beyond the ledger, because these numbers feed management reports, statutory filings and stock decisions, and problems discovered late are far more costly to untangle.
Key Responsibilities
- Post daily financial transactions into the ERP system, confirming each entry is backed by a receipt, invoice or other valid supporting document and assigning it to the correct expense or income category.
- Carry out scheduled reconciliations for bank accounts, M-PESA, cash holdings and other balance sheet accounts, including intercompany transactions and internal fund transfers between entities.
- Maintain accounts payable and accounts receivable records, keeping track of amounts owed in both directions and chasing items that fail to clear.
- Investigate unmatched, duplicate or incorrectly recorded entries until they are explained and corrected, or escalated with a clear written summary of the cause.
- Reconcile inventory records against goods receipts, transfers, consumption, adjustments and physical count results, and help close out variances arising from periodic stock takes.
- Support inventory valuation work and review adjustments, damaged stock and write-offs to ensure they are properly accounted for and documented.
- Assist with VAT, PAYE and other statutory and tax obligations, track filing deadlines, flag regulatory changes to management, and keep supporting documentation audit-ready.
- Maintain organised digital accounting files and assigned task and timesheet records, follow established procedures and approval controls, and support external accountants and auditors during reviews.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A degree or diploma in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, Business Administration or a closely related discipline.
- CPA or ACCA qualification, or active progress toward one, or an equivalent recognised professional accounting qualification.
- Two to three years of hands-on accounting experience in a similar role.
- Confident grasp of double-entry bookkeeping and general ledger principles.
- Practical understanding of bank and account reconciliation, including mobile money and cash accounts.
- Working knowledge of accounts payable and accounts receivable cycles.
- Exposure to inventory accounting and stock reconciliation, ideally in a business that holds physical goods.
- Familiarity with Kenyan statutory and tax requirements and the records they demand.
- Solid Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets skills for sorting, matching and cross-checking data.
- Experience with accounting software or an ERP platform is an advantage; training will be provided on our specific systems and processes.
- Comfortable handling several accounts and company entities at once, and disciplined enough to follow a transaction through until it is fully resolved.
- Honest, methodical and professional in handling confidential financial information, with the judgement to raise unusual transactions or recurring variances to management.
What We Offer / Why Join
This position is built for an early-career accountant who wants breadth rather than a narrow posting function. You will work across multiple companies, intercompany transfers and an inventory-based business model, which means exposure to areas — stock valuation, statutory compliance, multi-entity reconciliation — that many junior roles never touch.
- Structured training on our ERP system and internal accounting procedures, with no expectation of prior familiarity with our exact setup.
- Direct involvement in monthly close, statutory filing support and physical stock verification, giving you rounded practical experience rather than one narrow task.
- A collaborative working relationship with operations and inventory teams, since resolving discrepancies requires input from both sides.
- A Nairobi-based team that values accurate records, organised documentation and people who ask questions early instead of leaving issues to surface at audit.
