Role Overview
This position owns the people agenda for a supermarket network operating across multiple branches in Kenya, working shoulder to shoulder with branch and commercial leaders to align staffing, capability and culture with trading performance. Day to day, the role moves between workforce planning, employee relations casework, performance cycle management and engagement diagnostics — making sure every store is resourced, led and supported well enough to deliver consistent service and productivity. It matters because supermarket operations succeed or fail on the strength of their teams at each location, and this role is the link that keeps that strength steady while the estate opens, changes and grows.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate business and branch objectives into practical people plans that lift operational effectiveness, productivity and individual performance.
- Lead workforce planning, manpower optimisation and deployment across branches — setting staffing levels and resource utilisation so each store is appropriately resourced for its trading volume and patterns.
- Advise leaders on employee relations, disciplinary and grievance matters, ensuring decisions are fair, consistent and aligned with Kenyan labour legislation and company policy.
- Run the performance management cycle end to end, supporting managers with objective setting, review conversations and follow-through on accountability.
- Design and implement engagement, employee experience, culture and retention initiatives, drawing on people insights to diagnose and address the drivers of turnover and disengagement.
- Coach branch and business leaders on people leadership, team effectiveness and succession readiness, helping build high-performing teams across sites.
- Partner on organisational change — new store openings, process improvements and wider transformation work — ensuring people transitions are managed and new ways of working are adopted.
- Ensure HR policies and procedures are applied consistently, and use data on headcount, turnover, absenteeism, productivity and employee trends to inform business decisions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources Management, Business Administration or a related field.
- Professional HR qualification such as CHRP-K, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP or equivalent.
- Membership of a recognised HR professional body, such as IHRM, is an added advantage.
- A Master's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field is an added advantage.
- 10–15 years of progressive HR experience, preferably within a large, multi-site, high-volume retail, FMCG, hospitality or similarly operational environment.
- Demonstrated strength in managing employee relations, performance, labour compliance and workforce productivity.
- Confident working with HR metrics and people data, and comfortable influencing senior stakeholders across dispersed locations.
- Practical working knowledge of Kenyan employment law and its application in a fast-moving, shift-based operating environment.
