Role Overview
As the Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Trainer at Unity Homes, you will be the driving force behind a safety-first culture across our construction sites. Your day-to-day work involves identifying training gaps, building practical learning materials, and delivering hands-on sessions that change how people work. This role matters because it directly protects lives, keeps our projects compliant with Kenyan law and international standards, and turns safety from a checkbox into a shared responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out training needs assessments across active construction projects, then design and maintain a rolling HSE training calendar that covers all levels of the workforce.
- Create original training content — slide decks, toolbox talks, handouts, and stand-down briefings — that can be used during weather delays, scheduled safety pauses, and routine site inductions.
- Facilitate engaging, audience-appropriate sessions for site workers, technical engineers, supervisors, and senior management, adjusting delivery style and depth for each group.
- Ensure every training module and safety procedure aligns with statutory frameworks including OSHA 2007, WIBA 2007, NEMA regulations, and NITA requirements, as well as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 management standards.
- Lead or support incident investigations and root cause analyses, then translate findings into refreshed training content and corrective action plans.
- Champion a psychologically safe reporting environment where near-misses and hazards are raised without fear, and where risk mitigation becomes a daily habit.
- Track attendance, certifications, and competency records, and evaluate training effectiveness through post-session feedback, site observations, and incident trend data.
- Coordinate with external training providers, regulatory bodies, and internal department heads to keep programs current and audit-ready.
Requirements & Qualifications
- At least five years of hands-on experience managing HSE training programs, ideally within construction or oil and gas environments.
- NEBOSH IDIP or IGC certificate (or an equivalent internationally recognised qualification at the same level).
- Registered or approved trainer status with NITA, including a valid Train-the-Trainer accreditation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Certified Auditor for ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and ISO 45001 Integrated Management Systems.
- Strong working knowledge of Kenyan legal frameworks (OSHA 2007, WIBA 2007, NEMA, NITA) and their practical application on construction sites.
- Proven ability to engage and instruct diverse audiences, from frontline workers to executive leadership, with clear communication and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated experience leading incident investigations, near-miss reporting initiatives, and risk mitigation planning.
