Head of Transport

Role Overview

Lead the planning and day-to-day delivery of transport operations, ensuring vehicles, people, and schedules are deployed effectively. The role balances reliable service and safe, compliant operations with disciplined cost management, while giving management clear insight into fleet performance and areas for improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Translate business needs into transport plans, operating priorities, and fleet strategies.
• Direct fleet use and availability, including maintenance programmes, vehicle utilisation, and replacement planning.
• Set and manage transport budgets, tracking fuel, operating expenses, and opportunities to reduce costs.
• Maintain compliance with applicable transport rules, safety requirements, and internal policies.
• Review service levels and fleet performance indicators, investigate shortfalls, and recommend corrective action.
• Manage, coach, and develop drivers and other transport operations staff.
• Coordinate routes, schedules, and resource assignments to support efficient, dependable service.
• Oversee working relationships with transport contractors, suppliers, and relevant internal and external stakeholders.
• Assess operational risks, address causes of delays or downtime, and report performance and recommendations to management.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Transport Management, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
• Eight to ten years of relevant experience in transport, fleet, or logistics management, including substantial leadership responsibility.
• Demonstrated experience overseeing large-scale or operationally complex fleets.
• Sound understanding of fleet management systems, transport regulations, safety practices, and compliance obligations.
• Experience managing budgets, controlling costs, planning operations, and measuring performance.
• Strong leadership, analytical, negotiation, and stakeholder relationship skills.
• Confident user of transport management systems and reporting tools.
