Job Description
Role Overview
The Branch Manager leads the branch’s commercial performance and daily operations, working with the Area Manager to turn the bank’s strategy into local business plans. The role focuses on building a healthy lending and deposit portfolio, retaining customers, expanding use of digital, agency and bancassurance services, and ensuring that growth is achieved with strong controls and a capable team.
Key Responsibilities
- Translate bank priorities into branch growth plans, track performance against targets and budgets, and take corrective action when results fall short.
- Grow the branch’s lending and deposit portfolio by identifying prospects, leading sales activity, supporting customer onboarding and encouraging appropriate cross-selling.
- Develop profitable relationships with customers, local businesses, community groups, government structures and other partners; monitor changing customer needs and competitor activity.
- Lead sales activity across the branch and its attached agencies and alternative service outlets, promoting relevant banking, digital, agency and bancassurance services.
- Build the bank’s local presence through community engagement, consistent brand representation and appropriate use of approved marketing materials; share customer and market feedback with product and marketing teams.
- Set clear objectives for branch staff and sales consultants, provide regular coaching and feedback, support staff development and succession planning, and address people matters in line with HR policies.
- Oversee branch operations, including opening and closing procedures, security arrangements, health and safety practices, and compliance with cash limits and regulatory requirements.
- Chair the Branch Credit Committee and maintain effective credit, risk and compliance controls, including adherence to lending policy, Central Bank of Kenya requirements and environmental and social management procedures.
- Manage branch resources and expenditure responsibly, reviewing costs and financial performance against budget and acting where adjustments are needed.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field from a recognised university.
- At least six years of relevant experience, including three or more years in a managerial role, with evidence of delivering strong business results.
- Experience in lending or credit, ideally within a microfinance institution or another financial services organisation.
- Strong capability in business planning, sales and marketing, financial analysis, customer service and relationship management.
- Demonstrated leadership, staff coaching and team development skills, with sound judgement and problem-solving ability.
- Confident communication, negotiation and presentation skills; able to work independently and collaborate effectively with colleagues and stakeholders.
- Advanced business management training or a master’s degree in business or a related discipline is an advantage, but not required.
