Role Overview
The Enterprise Development Officer helps small businesses and entrepreneurs build stronger, more sustainable enterprises through practical business training, financial capability support and guidance on using digital tools. The role works directly with participants—from identifying their needs and delivering learning sessions to coaching them on business decisions and connecting them with relevant financial services—while tracking results across assigned programmes and locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and enroll eligible business owners, manage outreach and screening, and collect baseline information in line with programme requirements.
- Assess each participant’s business, financial management, access-to-finance and digital capability needs, then use the findings to shape appropriate support.
- Prepare and deliver practical learning sessions on entrepreneurship, business management, financial literacy, financial readiness, digital skills and business growth.
- Coach and mentor individuals and groups on improving operations, making sound financial decisions, adopting useful technology and building resilient businesses.
- Connect MSMEs with suitable banking and financial services, including accounts, credit, savings, insurance and payment solutions, according to their needs.
- Encourage effective use of digital business tools to improve efficiency, financial management, customer engagement and access to markets.
- Deliver local programme activities against agreed workplans, schedules, budgets, targets and quality standards, working with bank branches and community, business and programme partners.
- Maintain participant and activity records, submit timely reports, support monitoring and learning, document results and lessons, and contribute to improving training materials and delivery approaches.
Requirements & Qualifications
- At least three years of relevant experience in enterprise development, MSME support, business advisory, financial or digital literacy, banking, or a related area.
- A bachelor’s degree in business management, entrepreneurship, commerce, economics, finance, ICT, information systems, community development or a related discipline. Applicants with another degree may be considered if they have relevant diplomas or certifications in entrepreneurship, financial literacy, digital skills, business development or MSME development.
- Mandatory certification in the International Labour Organization’s Start and Improve Your Business (SIYB) programme.
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate training for adult learners and entrepreneurs, and practical experience coaching or mentoring enterprises.
- Experience helping MSMEs pursue business growth and financial inclusion, with an understanding of banking services and financing options for small businesses.
- Familiarity with digital business tools and technology adoption initiatives is an advantage.
- Additional qualifications in enterprise development, business training, facilitation, coaching or mentorship are beneficial. Certification in digital literacy, digital transformation or business technology is an added advantage.
- Experience or training in marginalized areas, including arid and semi-arid regions, or working with persons with disabilities is beneficial. Inclusive learning, accessible communication, sign language or disability-responsive programming experience is particularly relevant.
- Applicants previously employed within Equity Group must have received satisfactory ratings in their earlier performance appraisals.
