Role Overview
This position leads the entire credit control function, making sure premiums are collected on time and outstanding balances stay within acceptable limits. You will oversee debtor ageing, reconcile intermediary and client accounts, assess creditworthiness, and drive actions that reduce bad debt exposure across the business. Working closely with underwriting, finance, sales, claims, intermediaries, and legal partners, you will resolve disputes, tighten collections discipline, and protect the company’s cash flow while staying aligned with regulatory expectations and approved credit terms.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and supervise the daily operations of the credit control and receivables team, setting clear collection targets and monitoring performance against debtor ageing benchmarks.
- Drive timely premium collection from policyholders, brokers, agents, and other intermediaries, escalating overdue accounts appropriately and maintaining a firm but fair collections approach.
- Conduct thorough creditworthiness assessments for new and existing clients and intermediaries, recommending credit limits and terms that balance commercial growth with risk appetite.
- Oversee the accurate reconciliation of premium and commission accounts, investigating discrepancies and ensuring that adjustments, write-offs, and credit notes are processed correctly.
- Implement and maintain robust credit control policies, procedures, and internal controls to support IFRS 9 provisioning, statutory reporting, and audit requirements.
- Collaborate with underwriting and claims teams to release cover only in line with approved credit terms and to flag policies that are at risk due to non-payment.
- Manage the referral and escalation process for disputed invoices, complex accounts, and high-risk debtors, engaging legal or external recovery partners where needed.
- Prepare regular credit control reports and dashboards for senior management, highlighting trends, overdue exposures, collection performance, and recommended corrective actions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Commerce, or a related discipline.
- Professional qualification such as CPA(K), ACCA, or an equivalent credit or finance certification; active membership in ICPAK, ACCA, or another relevant professional body is an added advantage.
- A diploma or professional certification in insurance, including AIIK, CII, or the Certificate of Proficiency, is strongly preferred.
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in credit control, accounts receivable, collections, or credit management, ideally within general insurance or another regulated financial services environment.
- Minimum of 3 years managing or supervising a credit control or receivables team, with hands-on exposure to broker and intermediary collections, debtor ageing analysis, reconciliations, credit assessments, and IFRS 9 provisioning.
- Proven ability to manage debt recovery processes, coordinate with legal and external recovery agents, and handle sensitive stakeholder escalations while maintaining strong working relationships.
- Solid understanding of insurance operations, premium workflows, and the regulatory environment in which the company operates.
