Job Description

Role Overview

As the on-site caretaker of a busy commercial building in Nairobi's central business district, you will be the person tenants turn to when something needs attention and the person management relies on to keep the property running properly day after day. The role blends hands-on upkeep, quick-fix repairs, and constant vigilance over the building's shared systems, from water pumps to lighting and access points. Without a dependable caretaker on site, small faults become expensive breakdowns and tenant frustration quickly builds, which is why this position sits at the heart of how the property is managed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Keep lobbies, corridors, stairwells, shared washrooms, and other common areas clean, hygienic, and presentable at all times.
  • Plan and oversee daily cleaning routines, directing janitorial work so the building stays safe and welcoming for tenants and their visitors.
  • Carry out regular walk-through inspections of grounds and shared utility spaces to confirm sanitation and condition standards are being met.
  • Handle minor repairs and corrective works on your own, including basic plumbing fixes, small electrical touch-ups, and general hardware fitting in common areas.
  • Check building infrastructure routinely for leaks, structural damage, and emerging safety hazards, and flag anything beyond your scope for escalation.
  • Let approved technical contractors onto the site, supervise their work while they are on the premises, and confirm the job is properly finished before reporting it upward.
  • Log tenant maintenance requests, operational queries, and complaints, respond to them professionally, and follow each one through until it is resolved.
  • Monitor water pumps, utility systems, lighting installations, and security access points, and keep accurate records of maintenance activity, contractor visits, incidents, and tenant issues.
  • Uphold building usage rules, report damage or misuse of property, and make sure safety protocols are followed across the facility.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • At least two continuous years of experience as a commercial building caretaker, facilities assistant, building attendant, or in a comparable property maintenance role.
  • Practical, hands-on ability in basic building repairs, general plumbing, minor electrical maintenance, and hardware fitting.
  • Physically fit and energetic enough to move around and work throughout a multi-level commercial structure during a full shift.
  • Strong spoken communication and interpersonal skills for dealing with commercial tenants, visitors, and external service providers.
  • Sharp observational instincts — the ability to notice early safety risks, maintenance faults, and building defects before they escalate.
  • Honest, responsible, and self-motivated, with the confidence to act on urgent property issues without waiting for direction.

What We Offer / Why Join

  • Monthly remuneration of KSHS. 18,000.
  • Full-time, on-site position based in Nairobi CBD, Kenya.
  • A role with genuine autonomy, where your judgement and initiative directly shape how the property is maintained.
