Job Description

Role Overview

This position places an experienced construction professional at the heart of a university building project, where they act as the institution’s dedicated on-site guardian. Reporting to the Project Manager and working closely with the Director of Planning and Alumni Affairs, the Clerk of Works ensures the School of Nursing and Health Sciences Building is delivered exactly to approved designs, contract conditions, and regulatory standards. The day-to-day work centres on close site supervision, quality verification, systematic record-keeping, and clear coordination between the contractor, consultants, and the University.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily on-site supervision of all construction operations, checking compliance with approved architectural, structural, civil, mechanical, and electrical drawings and specifications.
  • Inspect materials delivered to the site, approve those that meet required standards, and reject or flag non-compliant supplies before they are incorporated into the works.
  • Monitor workmanship across all stages, including concrete works, reinforcement fixing, waterproofing, finishing, and installations, and require immediate corrective measures when defects are identified.
  • Maintain thorough site documentation such as daily diaries, inspection records, material registers, photographic logs, and progress reports for management and contractual records.
  • Witness material sampling and laboratory testing, and participate in commissioning activities to verify that systems and finishes perform as specified.
  • Track the construction schedule against the approved programme, identify potential delays or risks, and report them to the Project Manager with practical recommendations.
  • Coordinate inspections with consultants, contractors, subcontractors, and relevant government agencies, and confirm that statutory approvals are secured before critical construction stages.
  • Verify completed work for interim payment certificates and progress valuations, while monitoring wastage, variations, and any unauthorised works that affect project cost.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Diploma or Higher Diploma in Building Technology, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, or another recognised construction discipline; a bachelor’s degree will be considered an added advantage.
  • A minimum of five years of progressive, hands-on experience supervising medium- to large-scale building projects, ideally institutional, hospital, university, commercial, or multi-storey reinforced concrete structures.
  • Registration with the National Construction Authority (NCA) and/or the relevant professional body, and possession of a valid practising licence where applicable.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of finishing works, mechanical installations, electrical installations, plumbing, and external infrastructure works.
  • Working familiarity with standard building contract forms such as JBC, FIDIC, or equivalent, and the ability to monitor compliance with contractual specifications and quality procedures.
  • Understanding of the Kenyan Building Code, Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) requirements, and NCA regulations for construction supervision.
  • Strong ability to interpret architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical drawings accurately.
  • Excellent analytical, report-writing, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the integrity and professionalism expected in a university environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and construction reporting software; working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Project, or Primavera P6 will be an advantage.
  • Proven capacity to lead site teams, make sound decisions under pressure, and meet strict project deadlines.
