Role Overview
This role keeps the institution's classrooms, offices, hostels, laboratories, and workshops clean, safe, and welcoming for students, staff, and visitors. Day-to-day work involves routine and deep cleaning, waste removal, restroom sanitation, minor grounds upkeep, and preparing spaces for events, all while following health and safety guidelines and handling materials responsibly.
Key Responsibilities
- Sweep, mop, scrub, and disinfect floors and surfaces across classrooms, corridors, offices, hostels, laboratories, halls, and workshops to uphold a consistently hygienic environment.
- Spot and promptly address water spills, wet floors, or other slip hazards, and place appropriate warnings or barriers where needed to protect building occupants.
- Collect waste and litter from assigned areas and transport it safely to designated disposal points, taking special precautions with liquids, broken glass, and hazardous items.
- Clean and disinfect toilets, urinals, sinks, tiles, and wash basins on a regular schedule, restocking supplies and ensuring facilities remain sanitary and presentable.
- Inspect, clean, and store mops, cloths, buckets, and other equipment after each use; confirm that cleaning chemicals are correctly labelled and diluted according to manufacturer instructions.
- Remove cobwebs, clean windows, and carry out scheduled deep-cleaning tasks to keep all assigned spaces neat and well-maintained.
- Support grounds maintenance by mulching, watering, mowing, and pruning in designated external areas, and report any damage, faults, or maintenance needs to supervisors.
- Prepare and clean venues for special occasions and events, adapt to changing shift requirements as cleaning needs evolve, and support recycling and responsible waste-disposal practices.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) plus at least one year of relevant cleaning experience.
- Alternatively, Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) plus at least two years of relevant cleaning experience.
- Working knowledge of safe cleaning practices, including correct handling and storage of chemical agents and proper disposal of waste materials.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, work independently, and maintain consistent attention to detail across multiple areas.
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including occasional event-related duties, and to take on additional spaces as the institution grows.
