Our Mandate The Judicial Service Commission is an independent Commission established under Article 171 of the Constitution. Its mandate as stipulated in Article 172 of the Constitution is to promote and facilitate the independence and accountability of the Judiciary and the efficient, effective and transparent administration of justice. Our Functions Recommend to the President persons for appointment as judges. Review and make recommends on condition of service for judges (other than their remuneration), judicial officers and staff of the Judiciary. Receive complaints against, investigate and remove from office or otherwise disciplining registrars, magistrates, other judicial officers and other staff of the Judiciary. Prepare and implement programmes for the continuing education and training of judges and judicial officers. Job Description

Constitutional and Statutory Requirements for Appointment:

  • Applicants to this position must be qualified to be appointed as a judge of the High Court. The applicant must therefore hold the following qualifications: i.    Hold a law degree from a recognized university, or are advocates of the High Court of Kenya, or professionally qualified magistrates, or possess an equivalent qualification in a common-law jurisdiction. ii.    Have at least ten (10) years’ experience as a distinguished academic, or legal practitioner, or such experience in other relevant legal field. iii.    Have held the qualifications specified in paragraphs (i) and (ii) above for a period amounting, in the aggregate, to ten (10) years; irrespective of whether that experience was gained in Kenya or in another Commonwealth Common-Law jurisdiction. iv.    Qualification and experience in alternative dispute resolution will be an added advantage. v.    Have a high moral character, integrity, and impartiality (meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution on Leadership and Integrity).
