Role Overview
This is a hands-on till and invoicing position with a building materials, ceramic tile, sanitary ware and home improvement retailer based along Mombasa Road in Nairobi. Day to day you will stand at the point of sale serving walk-in shoppers, contractors and trade buyers, taking their money, confirming that what they are paying for matches what was quoted and picked, and issuing the tax invoices and receipts that keep each sale financially and legally clean. The role matters because every shilling that moves across the counter has to be accounted for: you are the final checkpoint between a completed sale and an accurate set of books, and the person customers turn to when a price or a receipt does not look right.
Key Responsibilities
- Take payment by cash, debit and credit card through the POS terminal, M-Pesa and bank transfer, verifying each transaction before goods are released.
- Raise and hand over valid tax invoices, receipts and other official payment documents once funds have been confirmed.
- Check every sale line against the agreed price, any discount applied and the quantity picked from the yard or store before the entry is finalised.
- Close the till at the end of each shift, count the physical cash, balance it against the POS report and highlight any shortfall or overage straight away.
- Generate and finalise sales orders and customer tax invoices in the inventory management system, and confirm product availability with sales executives and warehouse storekeepers before accepting payment.
- Handle billing queries, receipt requests and price confirmations from walk-in clients, contractors and retail buyers politely and efficiently.
- Prepare daily sales summaries, cash movement logs and banking summaries for the finance department, and keep receipts, credit notes and sales collection records securely filed.
- Follow the company's cash-handling controls, fraud prevention protocols and client confidentiality rules without exception.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma or bachelor's degree in a business, accounting or general academic discipline.
- At least two years of continuous experience as a retail cashier, ideally gained in a building materials yard, hardware store, tiles or sanitary ware showroom, or furniture centre.
- Practical, hands-on familiarity with POS software, digital payment gateways and basic computer applications such as MS Office.
- Strong numerical ability and a fast, accurate approach to reconciliation, including the ability to stay precise during peak trading hours.
- Working knowledge of the kinds of products sold in this trade — hardware tools, building consumables, ceramic tiles, sanitary fittings and home improvement inventory.
- Sound personal integrity and reliability in handling cash, card and mobile money transactions, with the discipline to apply financial controls exactly as written.
