Job Description

Role Overview

This role focuses on the hands-on electrical health of a fleet of light and heavy commercial vehicles. Day to day, you will use diagnostic tools and wiring diagrams to pinpoint and resolve faults in everything from starting and charging circuits to advanced electronic control units and safety systems like ABS and airbags. Your work directly keeps the vehicles roadworthy, minimises downtime, and supports the broader maintenance team in delivering reliable transport operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Use diagnostic scanners and multimeters to identify faults in vehicle electrical and electronic systems.
  • Repair and replace wiring harnesses, connectors, fuses, and relays to restore circuit integrity.
  • Inspect and service starters, alternators, batteries, and lighting systems, including headlights, indicators, and brake lights.
  • Troubleshoot engine control units, sensor circuits, electronic throttle controls, and onboard computer networks.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on electrical systems to catch wear before failures occur.
  • Read and interpret manufacturer wiring diagrams and technical service manuals to plan repairs.
  • Test all repaired systems under load to confirm they meet safety and performance standards.
  • Document each job thoroughly, noting parts used, labour time, and diagnostic steps taken.
  • Keep diagnostic equipment and workshop tools clean, calibrated, and available for use.
  • Respond to breakdown call-outs and perform emergency electrical repairs on site when necessary.
  • Work alongside mechanical technicians to resolve combined mechanical-electrical issues efficiently.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Diploma in Automotive Electrical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a directly related discipline.
  • A valid driving licence is required to move vehicles and respond to off-site breakdowns.
  • Formal training in vehicle diagnostics (e.g. manufacturer-specific or third-party certification) is strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of three years' proven experience as an auto electrician, ideally within a fleet or commercial workshop environment.
  • Hands-on experience with both light commercial vehicles (vans, pickups) and heavy commercial vehicles (trucks, buses).
  • Sound understanding of electrical safety procedures when working with high-current and sensitive electronic components.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, prioritise urgent repairs, and communicate clearly with supervisors and colleagues.
  • Comfortable working under pressure to meet repair deadlines and keep vehicles operational.
