Role Overview
This role anchors the financial reporting and control framework for Britam Asset Managers, spanning the Kenyan and Ugandan businesses, special purpose vehicles, unit trust funds, and alternative investment portfolios. On a typical day, the position holder reviews financial statements, reconciliations, and regulatory returns while steering a finance team to deliver accurate, deadline-driven reporting. The work is central to how EXCO and the Board understand performance, manage risk, and meet obligations to regulators and investors.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation and review of financial reports for the Kenyan and Ugandan entities, SPVs, unit trust funds, and alternative investments, covering monthly and annual statements, management accounts, trial balances, and supporting schedules.
- Produce Board packs, EXCO packs, finance leaders' reports, and operations reconciliation reports, with commentary on performance, variances, key movements, and risks.
- Challenge and approve balance sheet reconciliations (bank, intercompany, receivables, payables, investments, tax, fixed assets) and authorise journals, month-end adjustments, accruals, prepayments, commissions, payroll, and investment income entries.
- Oversee CMA regulatory returns and risk-based capital adequacy reports, confirming supporting schedules are complete and submissions are timely and accurate.
- Perform tax reviews covering VAT, withholding tax, and other computations, reconciliations, returns, and payments.
- Approve payment requisitions, vouchers, fund transfer instructions, and other disbursements within delegated authority.
- Coordinate internal and external audits, including audit schedules, query responses, and follow-up on agreed actions, while supervising and coaching finance team members to meet reporting and control deadlines.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and financial analysis, and review systems-generated reports and UAT outputs to safeguard data integrity; drive continuous improvement in processes, controls, reconciliations, and management reporting.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Commerce (Accounting or Finance) or an equivalent qualification.
- A master's degree in a business-related discipline is advantageous.
- Professional accounting certification such as CPA(K), ACCA, or equivalent, with current membership of ICPAK or a relevant professional body.
- Demonstrated experience in a demanding finance, investment management, insurance, or broader financial services environment.
- Strong command of IFRS, financial reporting, reconciliations, regulatory reporting, taxation, and financial controls.
- Proven ability in fund and investment accounting, risk management and internal controls, regulatory and tax compliance, financial analysis and management advisory, and audit and process improvement.
- Excellent analytical, report writing, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
