Role Overview
The Assistant Field Sales Manager works side by side with the Field Sales Manager to turn an area's sales ambitions into consistent results on the ground. Most of the week is spent in the market with commission-based Field Agents — recruiting them, sharpening their selling skills, and keeping their daily activity on track. The role matters because the growth of the area depends almost entirely on how well the agent network is trained, supported and motivated to perform.
Key Responsibilities
- Partner with the Field Sales Manager to deliver the sales targets set for the assigned area, tracking progress and adjusting tactics where performance lags.
- Source, screen, onboard and train new Field Agents so that every recruit starts selling with a clear understanding of the products and the sales process.
- Accompany Field Agents on customer visits, observing how they present and close, and providing immediate coaching, encouragement and constructive feedback.
- Keep the agent network equipped with up-to-date product knowledge, sales tools and clear activity targets, and follow up to make sure those targets are being met.
- Monitor market conditions in the field — customer buying behaviour, changes in product demand, and competitor pricing or promotional activity — and report findings with practical recommendations to management.
- Identify untapped sales opportunities in the territory and contribute ideas to lead generation plans.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the sales team to design and roll out local sales initiatives and campaigns.
- Maintain simple records of agent activity and performance so coaching and management decisions are based on evidence rather than impressions.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A minimum of two years' experience in sales or micro-finance, ideally gained in rural or underserved markets.
- Experience supporting, coordinating or supervising a sales team is a clear added advantage.
- Demonstrated leadership ability — the confidence to direct, motivate and hold a team of commission-based agents to their targets.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust quickly with agents and customers alike.
- The capacity to plan, prioritise and act decisively in order to reach agreed outcomes.
- A diploma or higher qualification in a relevant field is an added advantage.
- Comfortable spending the majority of the working week in the field rather than behind a desk.
