Art Teacher

Role Overview

This position places an Art specialist at the centre of the school's creative teaching, responsible for the learning of every pupil assigned to them and for nurturing genuine artistic confidence across a wide range of ages and abilities. Day to day, the post holder designs and delivers progressive lessons, assesses work with clear and useful feedback, and shapes the visual culture of the school through displays, exhibitions and creative events. The role matters because it turns Art from a timetabled subject into a visible, inclusive part of school life that pupils, colleagues and families all experience.

Key Responsibilities

• Teach Art to pupils across differing year groups and ability levels, adapting tasks so that every learner is stretched, supported and able to enjoy the subject.
• Plan sequences of lessons that build steadily in difficulty, developing pupils' creativity, technical control, subject knowledge and confidence over time.
• Assess pupil progress through ongoing observation and marking, and give constructive feedback that pupils can act on to improve their work.
• Organise, mount and contribute to exhibitions, displays and creative events that showcase pupil work around the school.
• Prepare teaching and learning resources, manage materials and equipment, and uphold health and safety standards in practical Art spaces.
• Supervise support staff working with the post holder's pupils, and help maintain consistently high standards of teaching, behaviour, safety and pupil welfare.
• Work alongside the Head of Department on curriculum planning, resource decisions and departmental self-evaluation.
• Contribute to the co-curricular programme by running Art clubs, activities and other creative opportunities, and by covering for absent colleagues or taking on supervisory and pastoral duties as reasonably required.
• Follow the school's safeguarding and child protection procedures, treat pupils with care and responsibility, and engage positively with professional development and review processes.
• Build constructive, professional relationships with colleagues, parents, visitors and other stakeholders, and represent the school well at all times.

Requirements & Qualifications

• A relevant qualification in Art, Fine Art, Art Education or a closely related discipline, supported by recognised teaching qualification or appropriate classroom teaching experience.
• Secure subject knowledge and practical fluency across a range of media, techniques and processes — for example drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, ceramics or digital work.
• Proven ability to plan progressive, differentiated lessons and to assess and feed back on practical creative work.
• Confidence managing a practical studio environment, including tools, materials, equipment and health and safety requirements.
• Experience teaching Art to children at preparatory-school level is desirable.
• Experience of working within an IAPS or comparable preparatory-school setting is desirable.
• A collaborative, professional approach and a genuine commitment to the wider creative and pastoral life of a school community.
