Role Overview
This is a field-first agronomy position based in Meru, combining hands-on crop advisory work with commercial responsibility for growing the company's farmer base. Day to day, you will be out among smallholder farms, cooperatives and farmer groups — diagnosing crop and soil problems, running practical demonstrations, and converting that technical credibility into adoption of the company's inputs and crop protection products. The role matters because it sits at the point where agronomic advice and revenue meet: better yields for the farmer, stronger and more loyal demand for the business.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out routine farm visits and diagnostic assessments of soil, crop health and pest or disease pressure, then recommend practical, locally workable corrective measures.
- Plan and facilitate field demonstrations, farmer training sessions and product application trials that show measurable results under local growing conditions.
- Build and maintain working relationships with farmer groups, cooperatives and influential rural stakeholders to extend the company's reach across the region.
- Identify prospective farmers, introduce them to the product range and onboard them as regular buyers of agricultural inputs and crop protection products.
- Translate product benefits into terms farmers care about — yield gains, cost per acre, seasonal timing — matched to the region's dominant crops and planting calendars.
- Hit agreed monthly targets for new farmer onboarding and product adoption through consistent field-level selling activity.
- Track competitor activity, pricing and product performance in the field, and feed clear observations back to technical and management colleagues.
- Maintain organised records of visits, farmer interactions, sales leads and adoption rates, and submit weekly and monthly reports covering sales performance, farmer feedback and market conditions.
- Coordinate local agricultural exhibitions, farmer mobilisation drives and community field days, and work with internal sales, technical and supply chain teams to keep deliveries and customer service on track.
Requirements & Qualifications
- A diploma or bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Horticulture, Crop Science or a closely related agricultural discipline.
- At least three years of progressive experience as an agronomist, field extension officer or agricultural sales representative.
- Hands-on exposure to agri-input sales, crop distribution or rural advisory services is strongly preferred.
- Practical knowledge of crop management, soil fertility, pest and disease control, and current farming techniques relevant to the region.
- Demonstrated commercial ability — pitching agricultural products, handling objections and turning interested farmers into paying customers.
- Strong interpersonal, training and presentation skills, with the confidence to address farmer groups and cooperative meetings.
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively across Meru and surrounding rural territories, with most working time spent in the field.
