Job Description

Role Overview

Based in Turaco’s Nairobi Service Center, the Actuarial Associate will help build and strengthen the analytical foundations of the company’s insurance underwriting. Reporting to the Head of Insurance Operations and partnering closely with the Chief Operations Officer, you will use policy and claims data to guide pricing, risk management and product decisions while making actuarial and reporting workflows more reliable through automation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Insurance Operations, Commercial and Technology colleagues to shape underwriting rules, product journeys and supporting data structures for existing and upcoming micro-insurance products.
  • Develop and maintain pricing models, assumptions and guidance, and explain pricing decisions to Insurance Operations and relevant teams across the organization.
  • Assess product concepts with commercial colleagues and partners, translating their design and customer needs into appropriate pricing considerations.
  • Analyse claims experience, loss ratios, lapses and retention across products and partners; use the findings to inform pricing, product design and partnership decisions.
  • Identify underwriting and operational risks, assess compliance throughout product development and launch, and coordinate corrective action where needed.
  • Prepare regulatory reporting templates and deliver required submissions within applicable deadlines.
  • Create dashboards and management reports from CRM, policy and claims data to monitor product performance and underwriting indicators.
  • Automate pricing, reserving, claims analysis and reporting workflows using tools such as Python, R or SQL; work with Technology to improve Insurance Operations systems and reduce spreadsheet-based manual processes.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Customer Experience to interpret customer feedback, address product pain points and build the team’s understanding of underwriting and pricing.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • An advanced degree in Actuarial Science, Insurance or a related discipline.
  • At least two years of professional experience in actuarial work or analytics; experience in insurance is relevant but not essential.
  • Professional actuarial or risk qualifications, or progress through relevant professional papers, are desirable.
  • Strong data analysis skills, including practical use of Python, R or SQL and a data visualisation platform such as Power BI, Tableau or Looker.
  • Experience building or automating data pipelines, analytical models or reports, particularly where this has replaced manual processes with repeatable tools.
  • Familiarity with policy administration, claims handling and insurance risk analysis is an advantage.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical findings to colleagues and partners.
  • Sound judgement, initiative and a practical approach to solving problems, alongside the ability to work independently and collaboratively with people from varied backgrounds and locations.
  • Empathy in insurance-related work and an approach aligned with Turaco’s values: protecting customers, acting with integrity, staying humble and enjoying the work.
