Role Overview
This Accountant role sits at the financial heart of a busy food manufacturing plant in Mlolongo, where daily work involves maintaining accurate general ledgers, tracking production costs across multiple product lines, and ensuring full compliance with tax regulations. You'll bridge transactional accuracy with strategic planning, managing cash flow forecasts, monitoring departmental budgets, and delivering profitability reports to senior leadership. The position demands a seasoned professional with factory-floor cost awareness who can thrive in a fast-paced industrial environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements that adhere to established accounting standards, then present them for management review.
- Oversee the general ledger, posting all cash receipts, payroll entries, and operational disbursements with precision and timeliness.
- Run month-end and year-end closing routines, clearing temporary accounts and locking periods on schedule to meet reporting deadlines.
- Reconcile bank statements, supplier accounts, customer ledgers, and key balance sheet items to identify and resolve discrepancies quickly.
- Track production overheads—direct materials, labour, and factory utilities—per batch, then generate detailed product costing and margin analyses to inform pricing and efficiency improvements.
- Develop annual budgets and rolling forecasts in collaboration with department heads, monitor actual spending against approved caps, and flag variances immediately.
- Prepare and file statutory tax returns (VAT, PAYE, withholding tax, corporate income tax) via digital portals, ensuring full compliance with KRA and local authority requirements.
- Manage external audit engagements by compiling supporting ledgers, answering auditor queries, and reinforcing internal controls to safeguard plant assets.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a directly related business field.
- CPA-K (Certified Public Accountant - Kenya) Finalist certification is mandatory.
- At least five years of progressive accounting experience within a manufacturing factory, commercial bakery, or food processing plant.
- Solid command of cost accounting mechanics, profit analysis models, tax compliance schedules, and inventory valuation methods.
- Strong analytical skills to reconcile complex ledgers and catch transactional errors quickly.
- High ethical standards for handling sensitive financial statements, payroll files, and corporate records.
- Excellent time management to balance tight tax filing deadlines with routine daily ledger entries.
