Job Description

Role Overview

This position sits at the centre of the Society's money movement, keeping the books clean, the cash secure and the numbers trustworthy so that the Board, management and members can all rely on them. Day to day, the holder runs the cash and banking cycle, closes the ledgers, and turns transactions into reports that show how the Society is really performing. The role also acts as a control point: because Saccos handle member savings and credit under close regulatory scrutiny, the accuracy and timeliness of this work directly protects the Society's licence, its liquidity and its reputation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all cash movements across the Society, confirming that every disbursement is properly authorised, keeping custody of cheque books, drawing cheques on behalf of the Society and reporting cash position and balances to the Manager on a regular cycle.
  • Receive, verify and bank member payments and cheques, prepare daily commercial bank deposits, and complete the related bank reconciliations so that cash records match the banks at all times.
  • Compile the Society's final accounts and prepare the monthly financial management report and quarterly economic performance report, alongside the quarterly financial pack presented to the Board of Directors.
  • Support the budget committee in preparing the annual budget, then monitor actual performance against it through the year and flag variances.
  • Handle tax administration end to end, filing statutory returns and ensuring payments are made within the required deadlines, while also submitting SASRA compliance reports and other regulatory filings.
  • Reconcile every ledger account and confirm balances, run weekly petty cash reconciliations, maintain the fixed asset register, and authorise and reconcile payroll.
  • Manage rental income by raising correct invoices, reconciling receipts and filing the associated returns.
  • Supervise and optimise the work of accounts assistants, deputise for departmental heads when they are absent, assist in organising and reconciling mobile banking services, and support teller training and education programmes.
  • Report immediately and in writing to the Senior Manager on any irregularity discovered — forgery, theft, misappropriation, staff misconduct or misbehaviour — and take prompt appropriate action.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business or a related discipline, together with a professional accounting qualification such as CPA (K) or ACCA, or equivalent progress towards one.
  • Progressive experience in an accounting or finance function, ideally gained inside a deposit-taking Sacco, microfinance institution, co-operative or commercial bank, including exposure to supervising junior accounting staff.
  • Working knowledge of IFRS, SASRA prudential guidelines and the prevailing Sacco regulatory framework, plus a firm grasp of tax law and statutory filing obligations.
  • Solid grounding in banking operations, covering the legal aspects, practices and procedures that govern cheques, deposits and reconciliation.
  • Demonstrated ability in budgeting — preparation, monitoring and analysis — and in cash flow forecasting and liquidity management, including maintaining reserves in line with applicable rules.
  • Confident in financial reporting and analysis, from analytical and statutory submissions through to executive-level reporting, and in interpreting key operating and financial metrics to assess business performance.
  • Practical understanding of internal control monitoring, the procurement process, and the development and implementation of accounting policies.
  • Strong data analysis and presentation skills, competent with spreadsheets and accounting or core banking software, and able to communicate findings clearly through public speaking and presentations.
  • Sound judgement and decision-making, well-organised planning, a problem-solving and analytical mindset, and the integrity and discretion to handle sensitive financial information and escalate concerns without delay.
