Role Overview
As Plant Accountant at our Mulot mill, you will run the complete financial backbone of a busy flour production site—recording every transaction, safeguarding cash, and keeping the plant compliant with Kenyan tax law. Day to day, you will move between the weighbridge, the office, and the mill floor to verify that grain purchases, production costs, and outgoing dispatches all match the books. Your accuracy directly protects margins in a high-volume food processing operation where a small ledger error can ripple into supplier disputes, production stoppages, or KRA penalties.
Key Responsibilities
- Enter all daily factory transactions into QuickBooks using correct cost centres, from raw grain purchases to milling consumables and utility bills.
- Check delivery notes, weighbridge tickets, and vendor invoices against purchase records before posting, flagging any mismatch for immediate correction.
- Reconcile supplier payables, distributor receivables, bank accounts, petty cash, and M-Pesa till statements on a weekly and monthly basis, chasing down every unexplained variance.
- Monitor plant cash movements and confirm that every expense stays within the pre-approved operating budget, escalating overruns to the Finance Manager.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual management reports, including trial balances, income statements, and balance sheet schedules for leadership review.
- Generate and transmit eTIMS-compliant electronic tax invoices for all commercial flour dispatches and branch sales.
- Process payroll runs by verifying overtime, deductions, and net pay, then support statutory submissions for PAYE, VAT, SHIF, NITA, and Housing Levy through the iTax portal.
- Maintain well-organised physical and digital financial archives so internal and external audits run smoothly and without last-minute document hunts.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce, or a related field from a recognised institution.
- CPA(K) or ACCA qualification strongly preferred; candidates with active CPA(K) finalist status will be considered if paired with solid practical experience.
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on accounting experience, ideally within a flour mill, food manufacturing plant, or other fast-moving FMCG environment.
- Advanced working knowledge of QuickBooks for transaction posting, reconciliations, and inventory-related accounting.
- Practical familiarity with KRA systems, including iTax filing workflows and eTIMS invoice generation.
- Sharp analytical thinking and a methodical approach to meeting tight monthly deadlines, tax cut-offs, and payment schedules.
- High level of integrity and discretion when handling payroll data, bank details, and confidential financial records.
- Willingness to work full-time on-site in Mulot, Bomet, and to occasionally visit the mill floor or weighbridge to verify source documents.
