Position Summary
- St. John Ambulance Kenya is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Officer to enhance the efficiency, quality, and coordination of our emergency response operations. The role is responsible for supporting daytoday EMS activities, ensuring compliance with operational and clinical standards, managing staff schedules, supervising EMT trainees, and contributing to continuous improvement in service delivery. The EMS Officer will work closely with the EMS Manager to maintain high operational readiness, uphold safety standards, and support strategic EMS initiatives across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Coordination & Support
- Coordinate daily EMS operational activities, including deployment planning and shift scheduling for EMTs, drivers, and support teams.
- Monitor ambulance utilization, response times, and crew performance to ensure optimal service coverage.
- Ensure compliance with EMS policies, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and safety protocols.
Equipment, Vehicles & Compliance
- Oversee readiness and maintenance of emergency vehicles, medical equipment, and lifesaving supplies.
- Conduct routine inspections to ensure all ambulances meet regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
- Track serviceability, repairs, and compliance documentation for EMS assets.
Service Quality & Contract Management
- Support contract implementation by coordinating EMS coverage for events, medical standbys, and corporate clients.
- Monitor service delivery, collect feedback, and escalate service gaps or risks.
- Prepare operational, incident, and performance reports for management review.
Training, Mentorship & Staff Support
- Supervise and mentor EMT students during clinical rotations, ensuring adherence to professional and clinical standards.
- Provide ongoing coaching to staff to enhance patient care, teamwork, and operational excellence.
- Assist in conducting drills, refresher trainings, and competency assessments.
Incident Review & Investigations
- Support investigations related to incidents, service complaints, or operational challenges.
- Document findings, recommend corrective actions, and assist in implementing improvement plans.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Emergency Medical Care, Public Health, Health Management, or a closely related field.
- Certified EMT or Paramedic from a recognized and accredited institution.
- Valid BLS, ACLS, and First Aid certifications (PHTLS/ATLS is an added advantage).
- Minimum 8 years of progressive EMS experience, including at least 5 years in a supervisory or teamlead role.
- Demonstrated knowledge of ambulance operations, EMS protocols, and emergency response systems.
- Strong leadership, communication, coordination, and problemsolving skills.
- High level of integrity, attention to detail, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
- Proficiency in report writing and basic computer applications (MS Office).
