Since inception, over 1 Million farmers in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda were insured from a variety of weather related risks &ย livestock diseases through products we designed. ACRE Africa is not an insurance company, but rather a service provider working with local insurers and other stakeholders in the agricultural insurance value chain. The ACRE Africa team undertakes risk assessment, product development and risk monitoring to facilitate access to insurance products for smallholders. With tailored micro-insurance products, farmers can confidently invest in quality inputs, increase their productivity and access agricultural loans.
Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in designing and pricing index-based and traditional agriculture insurance products, including drought, excess rainfall, flood, pest & disease covers.
  • Support data analysis for various parametric indices (e.g., NDVI, TAMSAT rainfall, soil moisture, Evapotranspiration, yield datasets, satellite weather data).
  • Contribute to actuarial modelling, risk assessment, premium computation, and loss-cost analysis.
  • Participate in portfolio monitoring, exposure analysis, and performance evaluation of existing insurance schemes.
  • Help develop technical documentation, product reports, and actuarial summaries.
  • Conduct research on climate risks, agricultural production trends, and insurance market innovations.
  • Work with the actuarial and product development teams to generate insights that strengthen product design.
  • Assist in preparing presentations, dashboards, and analytical outputs for internal teams, insurers, reinsurers, and development partners.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, or a related quantitative discipline, obtained within the past two years.
  • Strong statistical and analytical skills.
  • Foundational knowledge of actuarial principles (risk modelling, pricing, probabilities, forecasting).
  • Familiarity with R, Python, Excel, or GIS tools (advantageous).
  • Interest in agriculture, climate resilience, or insurance innovations.
