- The Business Insurance Manager, reporting to the COO, leads the strategy, development, and execution of VisionFund Kenya’s microinsurance initiatives. The role oversees full-cycle product development, marketing, and operations to deliver affordable and relevant insurance solutions that strengthen the resilience of underserved communities. The manager drives financial literacy efforts, ensures effective service delivery across VisionFund Kenya and World Vision Kenya areas, and manages project execution, performance monitoring, and reporting to ensure alignment with organizational goals and donor requirements.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy, Planning, and Product Development
- Develop and implement the microinsurance strategy aligned with organizational goals.
- Design or redesign simple, affordable, and relevant microinsurance products (life, health, crop, livestock, etc.).
- Conduct market research, client segmentation, and analysis of demographic and risk data.
- Pilot-test products, collect feedback, and refine product design and pricing.
- Identify and develop appropriate business models and distribution channels.
Marketing, Sales, and Client Engagement
- Develop and execute marketing strategies and financial literacy campaigns.
- Prepare and deliver client presentations to various target groups.
- Drive product uptake, meet sales objectives, and identify new markets or customer needs.
Partnerships and Stakeholder Management
- Map, build, and manage partnerships with MFIs, cooperatives, community organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations and secure MOUs/partnership agreements.
Operations, Claims, and Reporting
- Oversee operational processes including premium collection, policy issuance, and claims handling.
- Monitor key performance indicators, conduct impact assessments, and prepare regular reports.
Integration with World Vision Kenya
- Align products and strategies with VFK’s child well-being priorities.
- Collaborate with WVK branches and integration champions to expand outreach in WV operational areas (AP).
- Provide monthly performance reports and drive growth in insurance clients within WVK areas.
Staff Training and Capacity Building
- Develop training modules on marketing, selling, customer care, and social performance.
- Support delivery of training and provide on-the-job coaching.
- Champion a customer-driven organizational culture.
Other Duties
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, or a related field.
- 5–7 years’ progressive experience in insurance or microinsurance, with strong expertise in product development, operations, market research, and service delivery to low-income or underserved clients.
- Professional certification in insurance (AIIK, ACII, CII) is required.
- A master’s degree in Business Administration, Development Studies, Economics, or a related field is an added advantage.
Key Competencies
- Proven ability to design and launch insurance products across life, health, agriculture, and related lines, supported by solid skills in business model development, pricing, pilot testing, and market expansion.
- Strong technical grounding in microinsurance principles, inclusive finance, market segmentation, risk analysis, and emerging microfinance trends.
- Experience in marketing, financial literacy initiatives, KPI tracking, M&E, and preparation of analytical and performance reports.
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement, including partnerships with MFIs, cooperatives, and community organizations, and capable of drafting MOUs and partnership agreements.
- Hands-on experience in insurance operations such as premium collection, policy issuance, customer service, and claims processing, with added exposure to NGO-linked programs like World Vision.
- Strong project management, presentation, training, and coaching capabilities, with familiarity in digital distribution channels and financial-sector operational tools.
- Excellent communication, negotiation, analytical, and interpersonal skills, with a customer-centric approach, high integrity, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently, meet targets, and thrive in diverse community contexts.
