Job Description
The Environment Specialist will lead efforts to integrate climate resilience and environmental sustainability into project activities and SRHR service delivery. This role will ensure that the project meets national and international environmental standards and supports sustainable health infrastructure and practices. The specialist will provide technical guidance, capacity building, environmental risk assessment, and compliance monitoring across the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Advisory and Training
- Lead the implementation and periodic review of the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) in line with donor and national requirements.
- Advise on and support the integration of environmentally sustainable and climate resilient practices into SRHR service delivery, infrastructure development, and outreach activities.
- Design and deliver training for health workers, project staff, and community groups on eco-friendly practices, climate change adaptation, and environmental conservation.
- Support inclusion of environmental topics in community health education sessions, with an emphasis on the link between environmental health and reproductive health outcomes.
- Environmental Risk Mitigation and Waste Management
- Assess environmental risks related to project interventions, particularly those involving
- construction, medical waste management, or resource-intensive activities.
- Provide oversight and technical support for proper health care waste disposal, waste segregation, green procurement, and recycling initiatives in health facilities and community-level services.
- Promote energy-efficient, water-saving, and low-carbon solutions across project supported facilities and activities.
- Collaborate with health facility managers and local government officials to improve environmental compliance and sustainability of health infrastructure.
- Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Lead or support environmental impact assessments (EIAs), environmental audits, and other compliance processes.
- Develop and implement tools to monitor adherence to environmental safeguards and climate risk management measures.
- Document environmental outcomes, innovations, challenges, and lessons learned for inclusion in donor reports, learning briefs, and internal reviews.

Required Qualifications and Experience
Desired Competencies and Minimum Qualifications
- Education Diploma in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Environmental Health, Public Health with environmental emphasis, or related field.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in gender equality programming, including
- SRHR and GBV particularly in the context of development projects or
- international organizations in Kenya, particularly among the pastoralists).
- Proven experience in gender analysis, gender mainstreaming, and gender transformative programming.
- A good understanding of the social-economic and environmental dynamics
- of the ASAL counties, of Kenya, particularly, Turkana County
