The Northern Rangelands Trust is a non-profit umbrella organization supporting 33 community conservancies across northern Kenya. Its mission is to develop resilient community conservancies, which transform lives, secure peace and conserve natural resources.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee effective implementation of NRT member conservancy planned activities and programs.
- Attend and represent Northern Rangelands Trust at respective conservancy board meetings and sub-committee meetings and facilitate appropriately.
- Attend and facilitate the convening of annual and bi-annual respective Conservancy community members feedback meetings to address conservancy issues and share progress of work.
- Mentor all tiers of community governance implementation.
- Technically guide conservancy managers in developing and implementing community development and conservation action plans alongside annual and quarterly operational work plans and reports.
- Undertake capacity building training and refresher targeting conservancy management staff, board/committee representatives, women and youth on relevant aspects of management, financial administration, and governance.
- Coordinate with other NRT program staff in the development and implementation of enterprises within the community conservancies, e.g. tourism, fodder banks; gums & raisins, livestock to market etc.
- Guide in development of benefit sharing policy to ensure equity, fairness, and support transparent distribution of benefits accruing from conservation and wildlife-related business.
- Organize and co-ordinate community exposure tours, workshops, and seminars to increase the knowledge base of the conservancy members.
- Facilitate the Council of Elders’ meetings attendance and ensure matters arising from the meetings are addressed appropriately.
- Support research and monitoring programs within member conservancies.
- Promote community engagement forums to improve awareness and understanding of wildlife values and conservation benefits within constituent communities.
- Facilitate timely communication and feedback within the conservancy and the broader community.
- Strengthen Regional and national government policy, laws and financial support to enhance the community conservancy ‘s self-reliance.
- Oversee the management of the donor budgets and expenditure.
- Compile and submit regular reports to Northern Rangelands Trust and donors on a timely manner.
- Perform any other duties delegated from time to time by the Director of Programs.
Candidate Profile:
Qualifications and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Community Development, development Studies, Social Science, or any other relevant degree.
- At least 5 years’ community development work experience with various and diverse communities.
- In-depth knowledge and demonstrated commitment to sustainable socio-economic development, wildlife conservation and natural resource management.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft (Word, Excel, Power Point) and E-mail plus virtual knowledge, skills, and ethics.
