Xbox Hires Analyst Matthew Ball as Chief Strategy Officer

Microsoft Recruits Matthew Ball for Xbox Strategy Role
Microsoft has hired game industry analyst Matthew Ball as Xbox chief strategy officer, according to an internal memo from Xbox CEO Asha Sharma. Ball, known for his widely read annual state of video gaming report, is described as "widely respected across gaming, media, and technology." This move represents the second major Xbox leadership change in May 2026.
Ball's Background and New Responsibilities
Sharma announced that Ball has been advising Xbox on strategy since her early days as chief, having held leadership roles at Illumination, Amazon Studios, Otter Media, and Accenture Strategy. "Matthew has been partnering with us on strategy since day 10 and will officially start this month, reporting to me," Sharma stated.
Strategic Implications for Xbox
Ball's recruitment comes as the industry awaits a clearer vision for Xbox beyond the "return of Xbox" messaging. His expertise in gaming trends and media strategy positions him to help shape the platform's future direction.
Additional Leadership Changes at Xbox
Alongside Ball's appointment, Xbox has named Scott Van Vliet as chief technology officer. Van Vliet previously led Azure AI infrastructure at Microsoft and has over two decades of experience building technology and consumer platforms across cloud, commerce, gaming, and entertainment.
Promotion and Organizational Updates
Sharma also promoted Chris Schnakenberg to corporate vice president of partnerships and business development. These changes follow earlier additions from Microsoft's CoreAI division, and Sharma hinted at more adjustments to come.
Key Points from Sharma's Memo
- Van Vliet has been part of the Xbox community since the original Live beta in 2002.
- No changes are planned for Hardware, Helix, or OS teams.
- Leadership changes aim to "create more clarity and improve execution" ahead of the upcoming Showcase event.
What This Means for Xbox's Future
These leadership moves signal a strategic pivot for Xbox as it prepares for its next phase. With Ball's analytical expertise and Van Vliet's technical background, the company is building a foundation for long-term growth and innovation in gaming and platform development.
