Uber Sells Entire Stake in Serve Robotics

Uber has sold off its entire stake in Serve Robotics, the autonomous sidewalk delivery company that originally spun out of the ride-hailing giant more than five years ago. The disclosure was made in a regulatory filing and first reported by Bloomberg.

According to regulatory filings, Uber's exit had been building for at least a year, with the company reducing its stake earlier in 2025. The final selloff, however, came as a surprise to Serve Robotics, which learned of the decision only after it was officially disclosed, according to a source familiar with the events. Uber has not yet responded to requests for comment.

Background of the Companies

Serve Robotics traces its roots to Postmates X, the robotics division of the on-demand delivery startup Postmates, which Uber acquired in 2020 for $2.65 billion. A year later, the division spun out as an independent company named after its autonomous sidewalk delivery bot, which had been developed and piloted by Postmates X.

Uber not only invested in Serve but also formed a partnership with the company in 2022. That partnership was expanded in May 2023 to deploy up to 2,000 of Serve's sidewalk bots on Uber's app across multiple U.S. markets.

Why Uber Sold Its Stake

The divestiture comes as the two companies have begun to diverge on business strategy. During Serve Robotics' second-quarter earnings call, CEO Ali Kashani noted that delivery volume through Uber had grown for 17 consecutive quarters from Q1 2022 through Q1 2025. However, in Q2, that trend reversed for the first time, driven by lower-than-expected robot utilization.

Kashani explained that the companies have “differing views” on how to scale their shared autonomous fleet, including areas such as fleet coordination and merchant integration. Meanwhile, Serve saw deliveries with another food delivery partner grow nearly 50% in a single quarter during the same period. As a result, Kashani stated that Serve did not expect to renew its partnership agreement with Uber when it expires in early 2027.

Serve Robotics is one of more than 30 autonomous vehicle technology companies that Uber has either partnered with or invested in over the past several years.
