The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced on Friday that TikTok has agreed to pay $400 million to settle a lawsuit filed in 2024. The lawsuit alleged that the popular social media platform violated the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting personal data from children without notifying parents or obtaining their consent. Additionally, the DOJ claimed that TikTok failed to delete accounts when parents requested removal.
The settlement resolves allegations that TikTok, owned by Chinese company ByteDance, improperly handled data belonging to users under the age of 13. COPPA requires online services directed at children to obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information. The DOJ's complaint stated that TikTok did not meet these requirements and also did not honor parents' requests to delete their children's accounts.
As part of the agreement, TikTok will pay $400 million. The settlement, which requires court approval, aims to address the company's past practices and ensure future compliance with federal children's privacy laws. The DOJ emphasized the importance of protecting children's online privacy and holding companies accountable for failing to safeguard minors' data.
For parents, this settlement highlights the need to monitor children's app usage and understand the privacy policies of platforms they use. It also signals increased regulatory scrutiny on tech companies regarding the handling of minors' information. TikTok has stated its commitment to user safety and privacy, but the settlement underscores ongoing concerns about data collection practices in the digital age.
