Threads Direct Messages Are Live — Here’s How They Work
Meta’s social app Threads has finally added a long-requested feature: direct messages. If you’ve been wondering “Can you DM someone on Threads?”—the answer is now yes. As of July 2025, Threads DMs are officially rolling out to all users, but with a few important limitations. You can only send a direct message to people who follow you on Threads or who are mutual followers via Instagram. Whether you're new to the app or returning after a break, here’s what to know about using Threads direct messages today.
How to Use Threads Direct Messages on Mobile and Web
To send a message on Threads, tap the envelope icon at the bottom of your screen. This opens your inbox. Then, tap the pencil icon in the top-right corner to start a new chat. Currently, Threads only supports one-on-one DMs, and users must be 18 or older. The feature is available on Android, iOS, and the web. You won’t find group chats yet, but Meta has confirmed that group messaging, inbox filters, and expanded messaging controls are on the way.
Threads DMs Don’t Support End-to-End Encryption (Yet)
Privacy-conscious users should know that Threads direct messages do not offer end-to-end encryption. A Threads spokesperson confirmed this, although Meta says the app uses “robust privacy standards and safety infrastructure.” In the future, you’ll be able to choose who can message you and manage requests in a dedicated folder—features similar to what’s already available on X (formerly Twitter).
What Else Is New on Threads Besides DMs?
Alongside DMs, Threads is launching a new “highlighter” feature to elevate unique and engaging posts. This feature is designed to promote thoughtful discussions and will appear in areas like the For You feed. Threads plans to expand this feature across more sections of the app soon, keeping the experience fresh for users seeking trending conversations.
