Bad news for fans waiting to play on Nintendo’s newest console: The Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 has been delayed. Gearbox Software confirmed the change this week, announcing that the release, originally set for October 3rd, will no longer happen as planned.
Instead, the studio says the game needs “additional development and polish time” before it’s ready. To make things clear, all digital preorders are being canceled, and a new release date has yet to be announced.
Why Gearbox Is Pushing Back The Switch 2 Launch
According to Gearbox, this wasn’t an easy decision. The developers say they want to deliver the “best possible experience” to players and hinted that the delay may also align with the addition of cross-save support. However, the studio didn’t provide a clear timeline for when Switch 2 players can expect the game.
On social media, Gearbox reassured fans that the delay is about quality, not cancellation. Still, the lack of a release window leaves many Vault Hunters disappointed.
Borderlands 4 Performance Concerns
This isn’t the first performance-related issue surrounding the game. Borderlands 4 officially launched on September 12th for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but players quickly reported problems ranging from frame drops to stability crashes.
Gearbox has since rolled out patches, including one aimed at improving PC stability. Even so, reports suggest the Switch 2 version of the game demoed poorly at Gamescom and PAX West, raising concerns about optimization for the handheld-hybrid console.

For now, Switch 2 owners will have to wait a little longer before diving into the chaotic world of Borderlands 4. The delay may frustrate fans, but it could also mean a smoother, more polished game once it finally arrives.
