QUETTA: Condemning a recent terrorist attack in Dasht Goran, Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti said on Friday that the government had always maintained that such acts have nothing to do with Baloch values, rather were purely terrorism. He was responding to points raised by lawmakers on various issues in the Balochistan Assembly. Earlier, MPA Mir Jahanzeb Mengal, speaking on a point of order, said that “Fitna al-Hindustan” had attacked the house of Mir Qambar Khan Mengal in Dasht Goran at 6am. He said the firing continued until 4pm, leaving Ahmed Nawaz Mengal dead and another person injured. “This is my house, and my mother and sisters are there. This is not Balochiyat. If anyone is so keen on fighting, let them specify the place, field and time. The Balochistan chief minister should take notice of the incident,” he said. Condemns Dasht Goran attack; directs district administrations to inspect school and college buildings in Balochistan CM Bugti said the people of the province were increasingly realising that the Baloch were being pushed into a futile conflict. “What kind of tradition allows the killing of passengers and unarmed people?” he asked. Asma Jattak case Then, speaking about the high-profile Asma Jattak case, he said the government had been in contact with her family. “I have said before that the matter is sensitive and cannot be discussed on the floor of the assembly,” he said. The case he was referring to revolves around the murder of Ms Jattak’s father in August this year. The woman in question was abducted in 2025. After being freed, she levelled allegations against an influential individual, accusing him of threatening her family. The same day, her father was shot dead outside their residence. Referring to remarks by lawmakers during a previous sitting, the chief minister said it was inappropriate to name an individual, whose father had also served as the provincial chief minister, and allege on the assembly floor that those responsible for the killing of Asma Jattak’s father were present in the house. “I have reports from the security agencies, and the information provided by the member concerned is incorrect,” he said. School safety Referring to the recent school roof collapse incident in Peshawar where several children lost their lives, former chief minister Dr Abdul Malik Baloch urged the chief minister to direct the Education Department, the Communications and Works (C&W) Department and local councillors to inspect all government and private school buildings across Balochistan. He said officials should visit schools in every area and ensure that any building found to be dilapidated was closed until it could be made safe. In response, the chief minister said he had directed authorities to inspect the buildings of all schools and colleges across the province. Speaker Abdul Khaliq Khan Achakzai noted that because madressahs accommodate children, their buildings also require strict safety inspections. Published in Dawn, October 17th, 2026
