OpenAI’s Sora has already hit more than 1 million downloads in less than five days, making it one of the fastest-growing AI apps in history. According to Sora head Bill Peebles, the social AI video generator outpaced ChatGPT’s early growth, even though it’s still invite-only.
The milestone underscores how quickly Sora has captured public attention — and how AI video tools are entering the mainstream.
Sora’s Viral Launch Surpasses ChatGPT’s Growth
Launched on September 30th, OpenAI’s Sora app for iOS lets users scroll through a feed of AI-generated videos or create their own using the new Sora 2 model. The app even includes a “cameos” feature that allows users to insert themselves — or friends — directly into AI-made clips.
Despite its limited rollout in the US and Canada, engagement skyrocketed. Within days, feeds were filled with memes, celebrity deepfakes, and surreal AI-generated content that quickly went viral online.
OpenAI Faces Early Challenges Amid Explosive Growth
While OpenAI’s Sora has already hit more than 1 million downloads, its rapid adoption has also sparked backlash. Some users began generating copyrighted or controversial characters, prompting OpenAI to tighten content moderation.
To address this, the company introduced tools allowing creators and copyright holders to specify how their likeness or intellectual property can be used in Sora videos.
More Features, Fixes, And Moderation Tools Coming
“Team working hard to keep up with surging growth,” said Peebles on X (formerly Twitter). “More features and fixes to overmoderation on the way!”
OpenAI plans to roll out updates addressing user feedback and expanding creative controls. Given the app’s viral success, it’s likely Sora will soon see a broader international launch.
AI Video’s Next Frontier
Sora’s success shows the world’s growing appetite for AI-powered creativity. With OpenAI’s Sora surpassing 1 million downloads faster than any previous OpenAI product, it’s clear that generative video is the next big wave in consumer AI — one that blends art, identity, and entertainment in real time.
