Hot weather can put extra demands on your tyres, but heat alone does not normally cause a healthy, correctly inflated tyre to burst. The real tyre blowout risk comes when high temperatures combine with low pressure, existing damage, heavy loads, or prolonged high-speed driving.
Tyre pressure naturally rises as temperatures increase. TyreSafe says pressure typically increases by around 1.5 psi for every 10°C increase in ambient temperature, but modern tyres have a significant safety margin built into their normal operating pressures.
That means a hot summer day should not make a well-maintained tyre suddenly burst simply because the air inside has warmed up. However, hot weather can expose weaknesses in tyres that are already damaged, worn, cracked, or incorrectly inflated.
TyreSafe reported in August 2026 that warmer conditions can accelerate tyre wear and increase the risk of sudden failure when tyres are already under-inflated or damaged. The RAC has also reported more tyre-related breakdowns and blowouts during periods of extreme heat.
So, while temperature is part of the picture, preventing a tyre blowout is mainly about making sure the tyre is healthy before the heat places additional stress on it.
Low tyre pressure is one of the most important risks to watch during warm weather. When a tyre is under-inflated, its sidewalls flex more than they should every time the wheel rotates. That movement creates additional heat inside the tyre.
TyreSafe warns that prolonged under-inflation causes excessive flexing and heat build-up, making the tyre much more likely to suffer a dangerous blowout. It can also cause rapid wear around the outer edges of the tread.
The problem becomes more serious on long motorway journeys. Higher speeds mean the tyre is flexing repeatedly over a long period, while hot road surfaces and warm air add to the overall temperature.
A heavily loaded vehicle can increase the strain further. If you are filling the car with passengers and luggage for a summer trip, check the manufacturer's recommended tyre pressures for a fully loaded vehicle rather than relying on the usual light-load setting.
Correct pressure therefore plays a major role in reducing tyre blowout risk, whatever the weather.
Heat can also worsen weaknesses that already exist in the tyre. Cracks, bulges, cuts, embedded objects, and heavily worn tread should never be ignored, particularly before long summer journeys.
TyreSafe explains that repeated exposure to heat and UV can gradually weaken tyre rubber. The material expands in warmer conditions and contracts as temperatures drop, and over time this cycle can contribute to cracking and deterioration.
A bulge is particularly concerning because it can indicate damage to the internal structure of the tyre. If you notice one, do not rely on topping up the pressure and continuing to drive.
You should also pay attention to slow pressure loss. A nail or other object may be causing a small puncture that becomes more problematic during a fast or heavily loaded journey.
If you are unsure about the condition of a tyre, having it professionally inspected is far safer than hoping it survives the trip.
The simplest step is to check tyre pressure when the tyres are cold. Use the pressure recommended by your vehicle manufacturer, which you can normally find in the handbook, inside the fuel filler flap, or on the driver's door area.
Do not release air simply because the pressure is higher after driving on a hot day. Tyres naturally warm up during use, so the pressure reading will rise. Letting air out while the tyre is hot can leave it under-inflated once it cools.
Inspect the tread and sidewalls at the same time. Look for cracks, cuts, bulges, unusual wear, or anything lodged in the tread. TyreSafe recommends checking pressure, condition, and tread at least monthly and before longer journeys.
These simple checks can significantly reduce the chance of a tyre blowout and help you spot smaller tyre problems before they become roadside emergencies.
