Pebble smartwatches are officially back with their original name
Pebble enthusiasts finally have reason to celebrate—Pebble smartwatches are making a full return, and this time, they’re doing it under the original name. After years of fans referring to new models as Pebbles anyway, the brand has now legally reclaimed the Pebble trademark. CEO Eric Migicovsky shared the news in a blog update, announcing that the Core 2 Duo and Core Time 2 will now be known as Pebble 2 Duo and Pebble Time 2. For long-time users and tech nostalgia lovers, this rebranding is more than a name—it’s a homecoming.
Why Pebble smartwatches were iconic from the start
Pebble was one of the pioneers in the smartwatch space, launching ahead of tech giants like Apple and Samsung. Known for long battery life, customizable faces, and a loyal developer community, Pebble devices were beloved for their simplicity and functionality. Despite this, Pebble couldn’t withstand the pressure from larger players and was acquired by Fitbit in 2016. Later, Fitbit itself was bought by Google. Thankfully, Google agreed to open-source Pebble's software, paving the way for its revival under a new name—until now.
Community support kept Pebble alive all these years
While Pebble the company disappeared, the community never gave up. A passionate group of users formed Rebble, an initiative to keep Pebble watches functional by maintaining cloud services and firmware. The recovery of the Pebble trademark is a tribute to that grassroots effort. Migicovsky himself acknowledged this dedication, stating that anyone can now use the word "Pebble" for related software and hardware projects. It’s a rare example of a tech brand that thrived long after corporate shutdown—thanks entirely to its users.
What the Pebble comeback means for wearable tech
Restoring the Pebble name isn’t just a marketing move—it signals a return to user-first design in wearable tech. By aligning new products with Pebble’s legacy, Core Devices taps into a powerful blend of nostalgia and practicality. The revival brings fresh excitement to a market often dominated by similar-looking devices. With open-source software and a strong foundation of community innovation, Pebble smartwatches are positioning themselves once again as a compelling alternative for those who value simplicity, battery efficiency, and transparency.
