Uber Introduces Live Driver Selfie Feed for Parents

Uber is rolling out a new safety feature that gives parents real-time visibility into their child’s ride. The feature allows a parent or guardian to view a live feed from the driver’s selfie camera for the duration of the trip, providing a direct visual check on the driver and the immediate cabin environment. This is designed to enhance oversight beyond the existing trip-tracking tools, which already share the vehicle’s location and route.

According to the announcement, the live feed is accessed through the parent’s Uber app and can be started at any point during the journey. The video stream is encrypted and is not recorded or stored by Uber, according to the company. Parents can also see the driver’s name, photo, vehicle details, and rating, alongside the live camera view. This new layer of transparency aims to give families greater peace of mind, especially for younger riders using Uber Teen accounts. The feature is being tested in select markets before a broader rollout, with Uber stating that the camera feed will be automatically disabled once the trip ends.

How the Feature Works

When a parent books a ride for their child through the app, a new option appears on the trip screen: “View Live Driver Feed.” Tapping this button opens a secure, real-time video stream directly from the driver’s front-facing camera. The feed shows exactly what the driver sees through the windshield, giving parents a first-person perspective of the road ahead, traffic conditions, and the general driving environment.

To access the feed, the parent must have the latest version of the app and be listed as the trip’s guardian. The stream activates automatically when the ride begins and remains available until the trip ends. There is no audio transmitted, only video, to protect the driver’s privacy. The interface includes a small map overlay at the bottom corner, so parents can simultaneously track the vehicle’s location and watch the road. If the feed drops momentarily due to poor connectivity, the app displays a “Reconnecting” message and resumes automatically once the signal is restored. This feature is designed to be intuitive—no setup is required beyond the initial opt-in during the booking process.

Privacy and Security Considerations

The live selfie feed naturally raises privacy concerns for drivers, who may feel their image is being monitored more closely than before. Uber, however, frames the feature as a tool for transparency and safety, specifically designed for young riders. The company emphasizes that the primary goal is to give parents peace of mind by confirming the correct driver is behind the wheel for each trip.

To address potential misuse, Uber has stated that the selfies are shared only with the parent or guardian who requested the ride, not with the general public. The images are also encrypted and stored securely, with access limited to the specific trip in question. According to Uber, this measure is part of a broader effort to build trust, ensuring that the person picking up a teen is indeed the verified driver on file. While some drivers may find the constant checks intrusive, Uber argues that the temporary feed is a necessary compromise to enhance safety for its most vulnerable passengers. The company also notes that drivers are informed in advance when a trip might require this additional verification step.

Availability and Future Plans

The live driver selfie feed is currently being rolled out in select markets, beginning with a limited number of cities to ensure a smooth and reliable experience. This phased approach allows Uber to closely monitor performance and gather real-world feedback from the parents and guardians who use the feature.

Expansion to additional regions will be driven directly by user input and demonstrated demand. As the company evaluates the initial rollout, it will prioritize improvements based on how the feature is received and how it functions in daily use. The goal is to refine the experience before broadening availability, ensuring that the tool remains both secure and practical for families. While no specific timeline has been announced for a global launch, the current focus is on learning from these early deployments to build a stronger, more responsive service for the future. This measured strategy underscores Uber’s commitment to thoughtful, feedback-led innovation.
