OpenAI Pulls Jony Ive Promo Over Court-Ordered Trademark Dispute
Why OpenAI Pulled Jony Ive Promotional Video
OpenAI has removed a high-profile promotional video featuring CEO Sam Altman and legendary Apple designer Jony Ive due to a court order involving a trademark dispute over the name “io.” The video, which also spotlighted OpenAI’s $6.5 billion acquisition of Altman and Ive’s hardware startup, was pulled from both OpenAI’s official website and YouTube. While this sparked speculation about potential issues with the acquisition, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports the deal remains fully on track.
Trademark Complaint Forces Action from OpenAI
The court-mandated takedown follows a trademark complaint filed by iyO, a startup spun out of Alphabet’s moonshot lab. iyO is reportedly developing generative AI-powered earbuds and claims OpenAI’s use of the name “io” could confuse consumers. A judge issued a restraining order, prompting OpenAI to pull all promotional materials that referenced “io.” This legal development doesn’t affect the broader deal between OpenAI and the Ive-led team.
OpenAI Responds to Trademark Dispute
In response, OpenAI updated its announcement page, stating: “This page is temporarily down due to a court order following a trademark complaint from iyO about our use of the name ‘io.’ We don’t agree with the complaint and are reviewing our options.” The company confirmed that the legal action only pertains to the branding and doesn’t jeopardize the ongoing partnership with Jony Ive or the acquisition of io’s team and assets.
What’s Next for OpenAI, Jony Ive, and io
Despite this temporary branding setback, OpenAI’s collaboration with Jony Ive continues. Industry observers still expect Ive to play a key role in designing future AI-powered hardware under OpenAI’s vision. As the trademark dispute plays out in court, the spotlight remains on how OpenAI will navigate brand identity and legal challenges while advancing its ambitious hardware roadmap with one of tech’s most iconic designers.
